I am hearing different stories about just where this engine is from, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, or is it just a shrunk old mopar v8? Is it a tradisional ohv pushrod layout or?

None of the above. Its an OHC designed by mopar before they were bought by Daimler. Many seem to mistakenly believe its a Daimler design; it definitely is not.
