Subject: 3.92 swap, cost and ease? IP: Logged
Message: Hi. I have a 98 Dakota Sport, 318, 3.55 gears, 4x4. How hard and how much would it cost to switch it to 3.92 gears? Do I have to change gears in front and back because it's 4x4? And where do I get everything I need? Thanks for any help.

Message: I'm considering a similar swap, but to 4.10 or 4.56. You will have to change the front also to match; and I expect cost to be somewhere around $1000. It's a job probably best left to professionals,as they heve to be shimmed precisely. I've heard Yukon may be one of the better brands to look at; and I'm also looking for advice on brands and where to buy.

Message: I was looking at doing a very similar swap on my '97 4x4 with 3.55. I was patient and found someone parting out a similar year 4x4 dak with the 3.92. Considering the labor it will cost you to have both front and rear gears installed, it's easiest just to buy the entire axle and diff and bolt it in yourself. I could have had both the entire rear axle and front diff for 300 bucks (plus shipping though.) Unfortunately, I'm a poor college student and couldn't even afford that.
If you do decide to do the gear swap, I bought a driveline and suspension manual from haynes. It goes through the entire gear swap procedure step by step. Pretty precise, lots of pics, but I still wasn't sure it was something I could do myself. Takes a lot of special tools and lot of precise measurements.
I'd say your best bet is to be patient, check ebay and junkyards and look for entire axles/diffs you can just bolt up yourself. Good luck.
