I HAVE THIS SQUEAKING NOISE UNDER MY HOOD THAT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY! IT SQUEAKS WHILE MY 1998 DODGE DAKOTA 4X4 SPORT V8 5.2L IS IDLING AND THEN WHEN I ACCELERATE IT CONTINUES TO SQUEAK BUT AT A DIFFERENT PITCH AND FASTER.
I REPLACED THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND WATER PUMP TRYING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD BY A MECHANIC THAT IT WAS THE WATER PUMP. AFTER REPLACING IT LAST NIGHT THERE WAS NO SQUEAK BUT ON MY WAY TO WORK THIS MORNING IT STARTED BACK UP. THE BELT LOOKS FINE AND FOR THE PRICE OF REPLACING IT MAYBE I SHOULD TRY THAT TOO BUT I WOULD LOVE SOME SUGGESTIONS.

Replace the belt. I had a squeak under the hood that drove me crazy. I checked everthing and finally replaced the belts(I have a 88 dak). The belts looked fine no cracks and were only about 2 years old. Once I got the belts off there was a shine on the ones around the alternator that the others did not have. Once the new belts went on no more squeak.

change the belt first. cheapest of the bunch. if that doesn't do it it's either the idler or the tensioner.

Spray some WD 40 or something like that on the belt while it's running. If the noise goes away temporarily it's the belt.

i have a 99 dakota that makes the noise, ball joints is what i was told, the boots deteriorate causing dirt to build up, i just spray wd 40 on them once a month and it stops
