Subject: '93 trans. literally blew up IP: Logged
Message: I am trying to help my friend who has a 1993 dodge dakota 5.2 (318 magnum) Automatic 4x4.
Personally I am a Pontiac/Firebird guy with very little mopar exsperience, so I ask for your help.
Heres the drive line problem:
The rear mounting flange of the transmission where it bolts to the transfer case has broken off completely. The transfer case output shaft housing for the rear drive shaft also has a large hole/crack in it. I have no idea what he was doing when driving to destroy his tranny and transfer case, none the less it happened.
We need to have this truck driveable, I figure a new 4wd transmission and transfer case is way to exspensive for him right now, so I figure a 2wd conversion would at least get the truck driveable.
I know nothing about dodge transmissions, I imagine an 727 ?? out of a old truck or car would bolt up to the 318 magnum and we would just have to fabricate a driveshaft to the rear????? I would think the front differential would be ok just free wheeling without the driveshaft attached.
Would that work? If not what type of 2wd transmissions would work? And what donor vehicle would the transmission come from?
To help in finding a direct replacement... what is the model of transmission and transfer case that is in his dakota?
I appologize for my mopar ignorance,
Thank you in advance...

Message: Hi Drew
I've heard of it being done but never saw it. I would think, maybe, the driveshaft would be at a very radical angle.
Do you know what trans he has in there?
Also check the motor mounts, just a thought.

Message: I really have no idea what thransmission he has. ALl I know that it has overdrive. Thanks for the info about the drive shaft angle, I would not have thought about that, I'll look into it. The one piece of info that I would really like to know is if an older transmission from a 70-80's dodge/chrysler car or truck would bolt up to his magnum 318. I know there may be flex plate issues, but I for shure dont know the bell housing bolt patterns for dodge products.
Thank you for your fast reply, hope there is more....

Message: It should bolt up but what I just thought of is the sensor that bolts to the bell housing, think it's on the top left, I think, no sensor no run (sorry I forgot the name of the sensor. The older transmissions don't have the cut out for it. You would have to get one from a magnum motor.

Message: Hey Drew the trans. used behind a 318 is a A518. The crank trigger is the sensor SCDAK is refering too and he's right. The older trans. don't have the cutout for it. I'm not so sure the driveshaft angle would be a problem though. The crossmember probably would though. There are alot of differences in the 2 wd. and 4wd. that would make it difficult to change over. The only possible easy way to change to a 2wd. trans is to get parts out of a 92-95 and swap over. This would probably be cost inhibitive and be more work so I wouldn't recommend it. Hate to say it but your best bet is to find a junkyard trans/transfer case. I would also check the engine mounts and tranny mount. If something is out of angle this can happen. Really bad U-joints can also cause it. It's also possible something in the transfer case locked up and caused it.

Message: Great info guys, I noticed today that a bearing cap was missing off the front u-joint on the rear drive shaft. Think this would qualify as a bad u-joint.... perhaps this is what caused the destruction? Wierd though, looks to me as though the transmission locked up and the toque/momentum from the moving vehicle ripped these parts apart. I would think this is unlikely in an automatic though.
I will relay the info allong, thanks again...

Message: Drew by going off what you said that was broke,it sounds like the exstention housing was broke[about 8"-12"long that bolts to the trans case]and the transfer,
this ext housing can be unbolted and replaced easily and another transfer,if the trans still works
if not you can drill the hole you need for the crank sensor in the replacement trans bellhousing,
measure the overall lenght of the trans and tranfer thats now in the truck and check this against the trans you have/or get to replace,
the 904s are shorter than the 727s so one maybe closer to the lenght you need
also your check engine light may come on because
the O/D not being there and the lock-up convertor, but the truck should run fine
good luck
PS i have a A500 trans and 231 tranfers i,d sell
if you think your friend wants it,i,m in ME.so shipping maybe costly, plus i,d need some time to take it out
again good luck

Message: The opening for the crank trigger.....a little grinding would do the trick on a pre-overdrive unit, 904 or 727. Just match what the overdrive unit has. They had 4X4 Dakotas before overdrive trannys. Driveshaft (angle) worked fine. The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same. Swap out to a stick shift computer, and the check engine light won't come on because it won't be looking for an overdrive that isn't there.
