Hi, I have a 93 Dakota V8. A while ago I was removing the insturment bezel to service the speedometer cable. I inadvertently leaned on the multi purpose lever ( turn signals, wipers, etc) and heard a crack. Everything worked fine though. A few days later I could not get the headlights to work. I wiggled the multi purpose switch and the lights worked. Since then everything has worked fine for months. Now the headlights will not come on and nothing seems to make them work.

If I pull the headlight switch the parking lights and dash lights work. I can get highbeam to come on if I pull the multi purpose switch toward me and hold it. If I let go the lights go out. The daytime running lights work (Canadian Model) I have checked th fuses and all appear fine. I do not know if there is a fusable link or relay that could cause this, thoughts?

I took the mulit purpose switch apart and everything inside appears fine, the dimmer switch portion functions normally. I took the headlight switch apart and noticed it gets very hot.

I would appreciate any help or advice anyone could give me about this.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 92 Dakota with the same problem. It's in your headlight switch in the dash. If you pull it out you will see one of the center pins
will be burned. I have changed my switch several times over the last five years. The have been lasting about a year for me before it goes bad again. I think it has something to do with the driving light's but havn't found a perminate solution.

BCarr, thanks for the information. I took the headlight switch apart and found that one pin was loose and wiggling around. The connection on the plug was partly melted. I replaced the switch and it works perfectly. Your reponse definitely helped me isoltae this problem.
