Message: i just bought a JET thermostat that is suppose to lower the temp of my truck to 180 degrees from 210. my pops told me that this is a false sense of engine improvment and that your engine needs to run that hot in order to burn the fuel? i'm at a loss. could really use some help. i thought that by lowering the temp that i was actually improving the horse power since my engine didn't have to get so hot in order to burn the fuel.

Message: The lower temp thermostat has shown improved performance because when the engine runs cooler the air intake charge is denser so that means more air flow. More air flow means more power.
A hotter running engine will atomize the fuel better though leading to improved fuel mileage. Don't know what engine you have but I read a post on another Dakota site from someone who's opinion I respect and he said on his 4.7 the lower temp thermo didn't help any and this was on a dyno run so that's accurate. The reason we believe this happened is the plastic intake the 4.7 uses don't absorb heat as much so the benefit of the lower temp engine wasn't realized like in a aluminum intake engine.
