Subject: 4.7 PCV sucking oil. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2002 4.7 with 48,000 miles. Always use Amsoil 5W-30. The last two weeks, when I try to start the motor, it will crank 20 times then stumble for 5 seconds before it smoothes out. I happend to notice a small smoke cloud in the side mirror. I took off the PCV and it was dripping oil. I replaced the PCV valve which did not change a thing. The motor sucks air through the PCV strong, drawing up oil. Currently I have the PCV tube disconnected from the PCV and plugged. The PCV is open for ventilation and the motor runs perfect. Any suggestions as to why this thing is sucking oil up the PCV?

Message: Usually that means you have a plugged catalytic converter. The additional back pressure causes pressure to build in the crankcase and starts pumping oil out of the crankcase through the vent system. In the past when this happened with a carbureted engine and a crankcase vent filter, the filter would get saturated and the air cleaner housing would start getting filled with oil.
Are you sure the engine is running perfectly?

Message: Here is some more detail. All of a sudden, the truck would take 10-20 cranks to start, then it would stumble for a few seconds, then idle and run as though nothing is wrong. Then I noticed, when it was hard starting, that there was a small smoke cloud coming out of the tail pipe. I did all the usual maintenance, Spark Plugs-IAC T-body cleaning and replaced the PCV. Then it started up and ran fine. The next day, it did the same 10-20 cranks to start, stumble and sputter as soon as it tried to start, then smoothed right out and ran perfect. I suspected it was drawing oil in from the PCV, because when I replaced the PCV, it had oil dripping out of it. But I plugged the PCV tube going to the back of the intake, and the Truck did the same 10-20 cranks to start stumbling BS again. What is weird is that this issue is intermittent. Sometimes it fires right up instantly. Cold or Hot, it is intermittent. It is a frustrating issue.
Also thanks for the response!!!!

Message: Take the hose going from the PVC and take the one going to the other valve cover and block them with your thumbs ... see if pressure builds up in the block ........ my 99 318 has the same problems as you do but my piston rings are shot and i have a butt load of blowby which causes the intake to suck up a lot of oil .....
