Subject: Another Catalytic Converter Question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 4x4 5.2 and recently there has been an awful pinging/clanging sound coming out of the cat. I have a new one to stick on there but am curious to know what else I should check? Could something else be malfunctioning to cause the converter go out, and in turn, is it possible that the cat being bad could cause something else (ie muffler, 02sensor, etc) to go out? Just curious, thanks all

Message: A bad cat can be caused by other components but, rarely causes other components to go bad. Of course, a plugged cat doesn't do any good for your engine. How many miles on your O2 sensors? I think I'd be checking for a leaky belly pan gasket with that many miles on a 5.2L.

Message: thanks for the intel Rob, I'll definitely check the belly pan gasket. I'll have to take it to a shop to check the 02 sensor. I bought the truck used about a year ago and have no idea how much has been replaced. I love the truck, but how much I can afford to do to it is dependant upon how many scholarships I can pull next semester lol.. thanks though :)
