Message: My 2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7L with 121K has been revving while driving or sitting and sometimes getting stuck in a higher idle when I take it out of gear until I punch the accelerator and get it to drop down before I shut it off. It also lopes for a minute or so sometimes when I start it. Anyone out there have the same problem??? What can I do to remedy?

Message: I have a 2000 Dakota w/ a 4.7 and it does the same thing. It revs to about 2000 rpm when started and then drops to fluxuate between 1100-1500 rpms. Then it will settle to idle. Some times at a stop light I notice it will rev by itself as you describe. I took the throttle plate and TPS off and cleaned it and that didn't help. What is a IAC valve? What fixed your problem?

Message: IAC is idle air control; you'll see it on the back side of the TB when you remove it for cleaning. Make sure you don't twist the plunger. Problem could also be TPS (throttle position sensor). This isn't unique to '00; parts are on all late model Daks. No problem with my '00.

Message: I can't say I have any brilliant solutions, but I will tell you that you're not alone. I have a 2000 Dakota, only mine has the 3.9L V-6. I have problems with it revving by itself too and it drives me crazy. Sounds very similar to yours. For feedback from the readers of this forum, check out the following link:

This was my posting from a few months ago. Maybe some of the suggestions here could be useful for you. Good luck.

do you have the part# for the IAC? I check autozone online and they want $92.00 It might be the wrong idle valve, just wanted to see if you have a part# I could match up.

Message: Sorry but No I don't have it handy. I actually pulled into the parking lot, popped my hood and pulled my IAC solenoid off the truck and walked in, handed it to the guy and told him I needed a new one. He walked in the back and out with a small box and charged me something like $25.46. I walked out, put the new one on the truck, started it up and my up/down idle was gone right away.
Try this first (taken from SpeedTweaks):
How to Clean the IAC Solenoid:
This is recommended at every Tune-Up to prevent excess carbon buildup on the IAC plunger. In some cases, you'll notice a slightly erratic idle quality. This is the first step in taking care of that problem. IAC = Intake Air Control (Solenoid).- Remove the Air Hat from the Throttle Body
- Disconnect the sensor harness from the IAC Solenoid (Rear of Throttle Body)
- Remove the two Torx-25 Screws
- Remove the IAC Solenoid (Be careful not to lose the rubber O-Ring)
- Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and let it sit
- Spray some Carb/TB Cleaner on the tip of the IAC Solenoid and wipe clean (Do NOT forcefully twist or push the plunger - You will damage the Solenoid. Wipe very gently.)
- Spray a little bit more Carb/TB Cleaner in the IAC port on the Throttle Body and wipe clean with a thin/lint-free rag
- Reinstall the IAC Solenoid (Make sure you don't lose the rubber gasket on the solenoid)
- Reinstall the sensor connector and airhat
- Start the engine and let idle for about 1 minute.

Message: I have a '98 Dak 4X4,V6 and I have a similar problem. I cleaned the TB, replaced the IAC, checked for belly pan leak, and it still revs out of control. I would think at this point, the PCM would need to be reflashed. That's all I've got. Relf.

Message: I have had the exact same problem in my 2000 Dakota 4.7 for years now. I've had it at the dealership... they told me that it needed a throttle body cleaning. That did nothing. I took it later to a different shop, where they checked out all the sensors and couldn't find a problem. Eventualy they said it was a MAPS sensor problem, replaced that, which only helped but didn't solve the problem. Now it's back worse than ever and it actualy makes my transmission catch and slip at times because the throttle is going up and down rapidly at innoportune times when the tranny is shifting. It's made my check engine light come on only twice, the first one the shop said they didn't show a code on the computer check.
The funny thing is that it idles at over 2K rpms and I can get it to go back down to the 800 that it's set at if I ram my foot into the throttle 2 or 3 times very hard and fast. Yes, literally if I stomp on the throttle even while driving it will solve the problem for a short time.
Also, the throttle goes up and down even while in cruise control.
At this point I have no idea. The truck has 130K on it and it's in good shape otherwise. I've always taken good care of it and I have a feeling that this problem is simple but stupid people keep looking at it.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm thinking about getting a new throttle sensor and see if that's the problem.

Message: It really does sounds like a tps. And at 130,000 its a good idea to replace it anyway due to wear. Be thinking about replacing the O2 sensors too, if they are that age also.

Message: I recently had the same/similar problem with my 00 Dakota Sport. The symptoms led me to believe my tranny was going to hell. I tried 3 code pullers, and was only able to pull a code for fuel injector sensors.
I took it to a local friend/mechanic who has a code puller that looks like a laptop, he pulled six codes, fuel injector sensors, and TPS. The TPS basically regulates the voltage going to your fuel system and syncs it to your gas pedal (as gas is pressed voltage should increase).
He replaced the TPS and its running beautifully. The part was 59.95 last week... Labor may vary.

Message: Update: I just ordered a new TPS and IAC from Autozone.com.
I believe the throttle problem is now messing with my A/C, turning the compressor on and off. When I read the Autozone.com help manual, there is a note on the IAC page that indicates that one of the jobs of the IAC is: "A/C compressor load control (so the engine does not lose rpm when the A/C engages)"
I am now convinced that replacing these will solve my problem. All together it cost around $120 for both parts. I'm going to replace both when they come in and I will report the results on this thread.
