I use my 2002 QC AWD, 3:55 to tow a trailer (4,000+ lbs). Will the lack of a clutch driven fan create bigger issues than I solve?

No reason that you can't spin it on and off as necessary.
I would be a bit leary of removing it entirely when towing a good sized load. Anything above 15-20mph should ensure enough airflow, but if you spend any time at low speed with any stress, the mech fan may be needed.
