Message: I had a '92 5.2 with the Mopar PCM. The advertised horsepower gain was 25 on 93 octane fuel. Be sure to install a 180 degree thermostat with the PCM. The performance for the money was a bargain. Air intake and exhaust mods compound the gains.

Message: I ran a 15.49@ 84.98 mph with the mopar pcm and with out it I ran a 15.33@ 88.16 mph at the track. I dont have any mods but as far as I can tell it didnt give me any power. the truck was just not puling after 4900 rpm and it shifts at 5200 rpm. I have to free up the intake and exhaust before I can put this on and it being effective.
If maybe I could adjust the TV cable far enough to make it shift at 4900 rpms then I would be at a 15.1 maybe. But the tv cable wont let me adjust that far.
Get mods first then get the PCM

Message: It also depends on the year of the truck. I personally think that the OBDI trucks get a bigger punch from the Mopar PCM. Once you get into OBDII a Superchips or something similar is probably a better option. I put a Mopar PCM on my 92 318 and it made a huge difference. At the time I had an M1 and K&N. I later ported the TB. It did give me a noticeable increase in power. It also helped that I bought it for $50 used. I am not sure, but I think for a 96 your only option is a Mopar PCM. I don't think Superchips has anything for trucks older than 97-98.

Message: I've got a 96 SB RC 318 5speed w/crank pulley, elec. fan, 180 stat, 8mm wires, plugs, super coil, and FIPK. I was looking into the Mopar PCM, so let me know if you guys think it's worth it! I get a discount too, work for a shop and know the guys at the chrysler dealer.. not much but somethin.

Message: I would say do it. Port your TB as well - pick up a junkyard one for $40 or so to work on. Save up for an M1 as well. Really helps wake the truck up. Did in my case, and I have 194k miles on mine.

Message: With the mopar performance pcm do you have to run a high grade gas like 93? Or can you run with lower octane like 87 or 89? If you can run a lower octane do you still get a good performance increase?

Message: It made a huge difference on my 93. BUT YOU DO HAVE TO RUN 93 OCTANE FUEL. No if's and's or but's!! My 93 would spark knock on anything less and spark knock will destroy pistons FAST!! With the Mope pcm, short headers, true duals, MSD6A and Blaster coil, plugs gapped at .045 and K&N filter mine ran 14.70's at 93 mph consistantly. That was with an open 3.55 rear.

Message: Im pretty sure my 96 dakota is OBDII. Am I correct? I dont think they make any other performance controllers for that year, just 97+.
I dont want a jet chip I have heard they dont work half the time.

Message: Let's get one things straight gents. Prior to 1996 (OBDII) the PCM has absolutely NO CONTROL over shift points in the transmission. The tranny shift points through 1995 are controlled by the hydraulic governor, line pressure, and the throttle kickdown....primarily. The only reason an OBDI would see a change in shift points after adding a high-performance PCM would be due to higher output of the engine that would allow it to pull a bit longer before the tranny shifted. The PCM does not control this. On 1996 and up, it could do this, since it's totally controlled electronically.
You do have to run premium since the MP PCM has aggressive ignition curves programmed in. If you do not want to run premium, make other mods and use the stock PCM. It actually can handle quite a bit. It's actually preferred for standard supercharger applications due to the milder ignition curves, and it stii has the ability to supply the necessary fuel to feel 6-7 psi of supercharger boost (over 300HP on a 318). For even more performance, the MP PCM is then used with a piggy-backed boost timing retard device so you get more fuel, but the aggressive timing is defeated. The more aggressive ignition curve is good for approximately 7 HP on a stock engine, and it does help torque a bit down low, but don't sweat it. Yes, it will compliment other upgrades, but with octane requirements being higher, and the way prices are going....well, you get the picture. The stocker will feed quite a bit of an upgrade without needing to step up to the hotter PCM.

Message: I run my 99 318 on 91 octane all of the time. I have a Mopar PCM, Mopar R/T cam, 1.7 rr's, modified OE intake, 93 exhaust manifolds w/ 2 1/4" Y-pipe, ported TB, and did the timing advance at the bell housing.

Message: I have a guestion about my Dakota it is a 96 3.9. I bought a 360ci for it, and the guy the I bought the engine it off of said that it should bolt up to my tranny with no problems but that is not my consern. My consern is can I use the same wiring harness that is on my 3.9 or do I have to get a new wiring harness and PCM, or do I just need a new PCM? Or in this case should I use the mopar PCM (Iam building the engine from the gound up)
