Okay I've got a tough one. Ive got a 2002 RT, what would be better for cost, Ladder Bars or Slappers. And which would be best for performance. Any info would be great.

Will these apply to a GenII Dakota? I'm in the process of dropping a 360 in my 96 Dakota... And I would imagine that I will have traction problems... What's the best for the money? Thanks "QuickRacing"

for a leaf sprung vehicle(like our daks) slapper bars are about the cheapest traction helper there is. however, you must get the right ones and set them up correctly. the rubber snubber must hit the leaf spring right under the front eye bolt. most of the universals dont go that far forward.
slapper bars are designed to prevent wheel hop and improve traction. wheel hop = when you stomp the gas, the nose of the differential tries to rise(spin opposite of the tires), this bends the leaf spring into an "s" shape, then the tires lose traction, and the spring POPS back into its normal shape. if the slapper bars hit the leaf spring behind the eye bolt, when you nail it, it will bend the spring into an "s" shape. it shouldn't wheel hop, but you wont get the extra traction assist, and is VERY hard on the springs.

also the snubber should be set to about 1-1 1/2" below the leaf spring for best results and ride

sorry about the long post

I had a set of slappers welded up so that the snubber hits the spring eye, but I have the snubber at about 1/2" below the eye. 1.5" is too big a gap.

With a 3.55 rear end and a 26" DOT slick, I have hit a 1.98 60' time at the track (so far).

I'm using the Lakewood HD Universal bars. They're 2" longer than the std. ones. The extra length helps to get the snubber right behind the front eye. Best price I found was at lonestarperformance.com for $59.95.

like lab rat said, go with the heavy duty lakewoods, not the universal-as they won't really help you at all. i think i paid about $60 for mine also.

Well since no one has posted anything about ladder bars i guess i will...

i have ladder bars on my truck (no leaf springs at all) and i would say that it is the best solution for wheel hop. With it i have coilover springs (150# rated) and drag shocks. I gets all the power to the ground but REALLY sucks when it is the least bit wet outside. The only downside is the $300 price tag on just the ladder bars and the fact that they have to be welded in. If i had leaf springs i think i would go with the Cal Trac bars... i saw one of the TNN tv shows put a set on a old mustang and looked really good and promising.

Ladder bars are the real way to go BUT, there is the pricetag issue as you mentioned as well as the thought of welding on the frame rails of a four month old truck. Couldn't bring myself to do it.

Also, keep your eyes open for the Comp Engineering Slide-A-Link. They told me last week about six months before release on the one for the 02s.

I've had the "chrome" bars on for over a year now. They aren't chrome anymore-brown. But the still work great and my springs haven't bent a bit I had to buy some 3" buumpers fron the zone for 3.00 and shaved down the tips to get 3/4" clearance.
So for 28.00 bucks for the bars and 3.00 for the bumpers 31.00 isn't a bad investment.

Hey Doc,

Any more info on the 3" bumpers you bought, such as part number or section you found them in? I want to get mine a little closer to the spring and those sound like just the ticket.

First I tried builing up the base with washers, Jb's Cold weld-didn't work. So I find these SOS arm bushings in the emergency repair section. Worked Great!

Hey guys I also have the Heavy Duty Lakewoods on mine and they really help with the wheel hop I had before with my 3.92 peg leg, it still dosent cure tire spin though, need some slicks for that next :-)... but if you want to see what they look like installed go to my site, its not done yet but it does have some pics on it :

http://www.sporttruckhistory.freehomepage.com/

I bought mine at the local Advance Auto Parts for like 80 some odd dollars? They were easy to install I had to shim them though and add longer bolts to get the to be parallel with the ground and the springs and not angled up or down any at all. You can see where they bump the springs in that pic its just behind the spring eye! Good modding!
