Subject: Front Driveshaft Question IP: Logged
Message: Should the front driveshaft on a 98 turn when 4X4 is disengaged?
The reason I ask is I am having my front driveshaft rebuilt for the second time in 2 months and I noticed that my driveshaft turns with 4x4 disengaged in response to the front wheels turning. Wondering if this is the reason why it failed.
I phoned my handy dandy dealer service department and the answer I got was - it depends.
So if it should turn- how do I know it should be turning. If it shouldn't be turning - how do I fix it?

Message: Well, he was right, but stupid: it depends whether you have manual locking front hubs or not. He's stupid because he should know!
It's was a long time ago that Dodge stopped putting manual locking (free running) hubs up front.
Now, the front running gear turns all the time.
It should be turning. By design.
Personally, I would rather have free running hubs up front, but I can't find anyone who makes a kit for the later Dakotas.

Message: Your front driveshaft failed how? Fell out, or just threw a u-joint?
Wonder what the rebuilder did...

Message: The centering ball went and the joint where it sits was wrecked. Had to replace the yokes.
The place I took it too (the second time)Central Alberta Driveline said that the first rebuilder could have dropped a needle.
All in all it cost me 290 for the second rebuild and it was in and out in the same day. Probably should have taken it there the first time.

Message: His explanation makes good sense. $290 sounded a bit high, but then I saw "Central Alberta", and it made more sense. Glad you got it working...
