Subject: Backfiring!?

Message:
My check engine light is on and it sounds like I have 2 bad O2 sensors, one code was Bank 1 Sens. 1 Overvoltage and the other was Bank 1 Sens. 2 Heater Circ. malfunction. Heater circuit is directrly related to the O2 sensor but I'm not sure about the voltage one. My truck under low rpm loads really starts to bog down and starts popping/backfiring, any suggestions? I've installed a new cap, rotor, 8mm wires, 3923's, an accel super coil, not that these are directly related but an underdrive pulley and elec. fan. I can power out of the bog if I floor board it. My truck is a 96 318 RC SB w/178,XXX miles. Any help is appreciated!

The downstream o2 sensor which monitors the cat condition is the one with the heater circuit code. The overvoltage one is the upstream sensor which adjusts the a/f mixture in closed loop operations. It means that the pcm is receiving a return signal from the sensor which is above 1v for too long a period and the pcm has probably reacted to this signal by causing a really rich mixture (the old "garbage in, garbage out" applies here). If your sensors have never been replaced, they are way beyond their life expectancy (generally, 80-100k range). Continued operation over a period of time will shorten the life of the cat too. HTH.

Thanks for the information I've never had it explained to me exactly how it works. I had an idea but wasn't totally sure. I went and bought 2 new O2's and before i cleared the codes I checked them again and this time it said they were both over voltage. I cleared them and my truck has run beautifly since, granted that was only about 20 miles ago and or 4 hours ago since the install. It's possible the symtom could come back but i don't think it will. Last time the light came on instantly and so far so good. It's like having a whole new truck, I love it. Better gas milage too. Thanks again for the knowledge!
