Message: I'm in a very tight spot...I need my truck to run today. My son brought my 97 home yesterday overheated...
It won't hold antifreeze. It leaks out below the engine, not in the engine compartment. It leaks even while not under pressure. It's not a slow drip...it's a steady stream.
I got a look underneath, and coolant is running from the front plate of the tranny case (the plate right next to the oil pan).
I can see a small trickle of green antifreeze running down the tranny case plate, but i can't see where it's coming from...
The is no evidence of a leak in the engine compartment. The hoses and clamps all look good to me. The car will start and idle okay...but it's leaking from SOMEWHERE. Where should i look.
Oh, and is there by any chance a web site where i can see PICs of the suspect part(s). Both my local autoparts stores, and my local Dodge dealership are out of stock of service manuals.
Thank you very much.

Message: Wish I could help you, but I've got the same problem, and it's been driving me nuts. There is always a small drip of antifreeze on the bottom of my bellhousing. The leak appears to be coming down the front plate of the tranny between it and the back of the oil pan. I can't figure it out for my life. My truck isn't overheating or anything and It holds coolant just fine, it's just a tiny leak, but I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA where it's coming from.

Message: sounds like freeze plugs. not very easy to change if it's the ones on the back of the block. you will have to pull the tranny.

Message: Any leakage from the back or sides of the engine always seem to end up on the trans plate; oil and water both. Sometimes tracking down the leak can be difficult. Start with the easy things first, like intake manifold. Then consider freeze plugs. If I remember correctly, the dodge had freeze plugs on the rear of the block, to. But they require engine or trans removal to get to them.

Message: daddio and .boB,
Thank you for your responses. They are very helpful.
Is it possible (or, more precisely, how do I) diagnose that its the freeze plugs without pulling the tranny?
Thanks again!

Message: there is a dye available at auto parts stores that you can add to the cooling system and using a black light it will show up. i'd first claen that engine compartment really well then get that dye and try it.
