Subject: Truck Plugs? IP: Logged
Message: i've been doing some looking around this site and on the internet about truck plugs. i'm just wondering your guy's experiences with them and what you think are some good ones. i also figure i might as well change wires and cap/rotor while i'm at it so any input other than the cap/rotor will be a bitch just from the quick glances i've taken at it is greatly appreciated.

Message: I think truck plugs are good marketing, and nothing else. The theory is that you have a big tough truck to drive to Starbucks, so you need a big tough plug in there. Marketing hype, but it works. I've looked at them, and don't see any differance worth the extra bux. Seems like the internal construction - the parts that actually makes the spark - is the same as standard plugs. Personally, I use stock replacement autolites.
OTOH, if you're bouncing your truck across the Moad rocks, or climbing the Rubicon, then the heavier construction might come in handy. But I've never had the misfortune to break a plug in use.

Message: Make sure the cap/rotor has brass contacts. Napa sells one, as does Accel. I got my Accel cap/rotor from Summit. Ordered a set of MSD wires and a BlasterSS coil at the same time. You can also get them from KRC, socaldakota.com and others. Taylor wires are just as good, and cheaper than MSD too. Get the spiro-pro version.
Best plugs for these trucks are Autolite or NGKs. Autolites are cheaper, and are what I run right now. I have a set of NGKs waiting to go in on the next plug change - I ordered them from NGK when I got a new O2 sensor since I had a discount I could use and needed the plugs to get me over $50 or so to use it.
It can be a pain to do the distributor on a stock GenIII truck because it is tucked back behind everything. An M1 makes it much easier to do though.

Message: I`m using E3 plugs since last month.
I have used 3923s for 3 years and was tired of changing it every 15 to 20k miles, (horrible at 20k miles).
What i notice is a much smoother idleing, very smooth when the engine still cold.
As to gas consumption, it probably helps a little. I just did not go for a test yet, but i get between 18 and 22 mpg depends on what i want.
My truck is a 2000 slt plus, cc, 4.7, 5 manual, 2wd, 3.92 lsd rear.
