Message: ya thats what I was told. Do you think the comp cams XE274H or the XE284H are too big for my engine? Would I get better performance with the XE268 cam that you suggested.

Message: Yeah, it's the general concensus that the XE268 is the upper limit for a good streetable cam in the 318. Now, would a hotter one run? Sure, but it'd be fussy, and larger than the 268 you're getting into redlines above 6400rpm, so your top end potential in the cam would be wasted without bottom end beefing. The 268 dovetails nicely with the max safe rpm you'll want to run, while still delivering excellent power throughout your useable rpm range. If, for some reason you got a beefier bottom end later on, kicking the rocker ratio to 1.6 would shift the rpm range up a few hundred rpm like a larger cam. That said, the XE268 is your best bet for your current goals. Remember, that cam, with the right complimentary parts, will deliver 400hp at 6,000rpm in a 318 with great torque from the basement on up.

Message: Okay thanks. I kinda got the bigger is better mentality for a while. I found a running 318 today for $400 from the carb to the pan. Now i just need to find a tranny and I might be able to do the swap at schoo, if I have enough time. Are there any markings on the a518 tranny for me to recognize it by? I dont want to get suckered into getting the same tranny I already have.

Message: The 518 has a large inverted "V" on it's midsection. The "V" 1.25" on one side, and 1.5" on the other. The A500 does not have this in the casting. Take a look at this 4WD A518. Different tailsection, but the same inverted "V" on the midsection. Can't miss it, and only the A518/46RH/46RE, meaning larger units, have this.

Message: Also, on the inverted "V"......this is only on the passenger side of the tranny. The driver side is smooth.

Message: okay thanks. I phoned the local wreckers and they didnt have one. the closest on I could find is 2 hours away and $1000. I think that is a little steep. How much would my A500 stand up to?

Message: A stock A500 will do pretty well IF you put the TransGo kit in, but you will find that they might go for $100 less than the A518 (same overdrive unit, the 500 is just smaller in the front three). Also, since you're looking at a milder setup than the supercharged killer, you'll do well with that 8 1/4 with a limited slip. Just don't expect it to live if you put slicks on and do heavy drag racin'. They put these rears under 5,000lb RamChargers (2WD). Anyway, I still have mine and it's getting a much more potent 360Mag.

Message: Okay. I was planning on putting a shift kit in it anyway so thats not a problem. I wouldnt mind swapping to the 8 3/4 rear and five lug rotors and then running some old style 15" slotted mags or new american racing versions.

Message: I did drive every day with that converter. I don't remember a difference in mileage at all but I would say it would decrease slightly. Actually this converter wasn't much different than stock under normal driving, but when you stomped the pedal the rpms would come straight up to 2400, made a big difference off the line(over stock that is). Well, if you decide too bid on it good luck.

Message: I would go with a electric choke for a street carb. I had a Holley street avenger carb with a electric choke and I loved it. I drove the truck every day with that carb and started right up with no problems. I now have a Mighty Demon carb with no choke at all and let me tell you it takes a while too get it too idle. As for the trans cooler, I just went too autozone and got the largest trans cooler they had. It came with hose and clamps, the only thing I needed was a 5/16 hose barb, too extend the factory hose too reach the trans cooler. I mounted mine infront of the a/c condenser using the mounting ties that came with the cooler. So it was attached too the condenser. Then just ran the other end of the hose back too the radiator. This way the trans cooler and the radiator cooled the tranny.
