Don't know if this happens in Dakotas, not in mine yet anyway, but there is someting that wears in your tilt steering wheel that can cause your lights to go out. My dads Ram does that, you have to have the tilt in just the right notch or the lights wont even work at all. He needs to get this checked incase its something serious.
Just an idea about your problem, I've been known to be wrong before.....

Well it's definetly a bad connection problem. You can replace parts such as suggested or you can fix it. Finding wiring problems can be hard sometimes. Try turning you lights on and wiggling all parts of the wiring harness. If you move it somewhere and the lights go off BINGO you've found a problem. Problem areas with these trucks seem to be corroded connections at the bulkhead connector and dimmer switch. If your driving it again and they go off try the dimmer to see if that causes it to come back on. If so the dimmer switch is bad.

I had a problem with my 2001 cc 4.7 2wd
The Head Lights and inside lights went out they
fixed it by replacing the C.T.M.
That was three years ago have never had the problem again.
