Subject: Best BANG fo the buck? IP: Logged
Message: I live in north Cali. and drive up and down hills every day. My 2001 4.7L V8 dakota 4x4 quad cab (gibson performance exhaust) shifts alot going up some small hills. Wondering which mods are the best way to go to give me the HP and /or torque I need to stop this. Superchips, Jet chip with throttle body spacer and colder therm., headers, etc...? Please help! would like to stay under $300 if possible.

Message: I live in socal. tony at prestons seems to know the most about gearing and mods. he is in La Mesa and can find the number if you want. Should be some good local folks up there. where are you? Frisco. I would Imagine that everyone up does not drive something that gets over 40 mpg. I had a 3.0 caravan that did that. It was very annoying. If it is auto maybe the computer is messed up. I have an 02 qc 4.7 slt dak and it does fine upthis long hill. Maybe it has something to do with 4x4. I really don't know

Message: You need some lower gears, like 4.10s, but I doubt you are going to buy them and get them installed for $300 bucks.
My truck is just 2WD and I paid $200 for Motive 4.10 gears. And another $250 to have them and the LSD installed.
Also some HO cams would be a good investment. Gives you more torque at the rear wheels. You can get a set of cams for under $300 and then may be you and some of your buddies can install them.
Hope this helps ya,

Message:
The engine and transmission computers shift the transmission up or down based on the engine and/or transmission load and temperature, by using inputs from several sensors on and in your engine and transmission. More engine HP and torque will most likely cause just the opposite of what you're trying to do.
Try this simple test.
Turn off overdrive.
See if that gives your tranny any relief.

Message: You could do the cams as FLDak suggests on your budget. Another good mod would be the Leach or other flash for your PCM, or try the superchip. That would cost a bit more.
