Subject: 92 Dakota fuel gauge problem IP: Logged
Message: 92 Dakota w/318. Original problem fuel gauge flailing wildly,
but did give some indication of fual level. Replaced fuel pump
and sending unit (twice). Fuel gauge no longer flies around but
gives no indication of fuel level. Now fuel gauge indicates empty
with low fuel idiot light on. Fuel gauge moves only slightly
around the empty level mark. Any suggestions?

Message: Check the wiring for the pump/sender unit. There are 2 grounds used, one for the sender and one for the pump itself. The sender ground can go bad. Splice it into the pump ground. That might solve your problem.

Message: Thank you for the help. Did everything everyone suggested.
Better. Still flailing. Not as wildly. Range of the swing of the
indicator seems to be less (it doesn't hit the stops any more).
Fuel level drops slightly when the break is depressed. Still trying
to fix it.

Message: if your dummy light is on and the guage is reading empty, I'd say it may be a problem with the float. My guage on my 91 hasn't worked in 10 years, but the dummy light does- so I just use that.
