Message: I have a Jeep Wrangler with over 100K and am doing a little research on engine replacement before it becomes a necessity. Jeep Grand people don't talk on message boards and know very little about the grocery getter they are driving. Running 33's, what type of mileage will that engine get? What auto transmission is currently mated to it? If anyone is really technically knowledgeable, what is needed to complete a crate engine swap electronically? What hassle am I going to get from the smog police in CA for doing this?

Message: It would be impossible to even make an inteligent guess at the transmission without at least knowing what year/engine you have. No offense meant, but if you can't figure out which tranny you have, you're probably not ready to try an engine swap.

Message: Just noticed 4.7 in title - depending on year, you either have 45 RFE or 545 RFE transmission.

Message: Isn't the Wrangler a SMALLER Jeep? It doesn't COME with a 4.7 does it?
I thought he was asking about possible engine SWAP like SWAPPING in a 4.7
in that case he HAS to get a 5-45RFE and the complete electronics for it all. That would be some feat unless you know a LOT about these new engine/tranny combos.
A 360 would bolt to the 46RE which wouldn;t need any electronics except 12VDC to the lock up. I think I'm right anyway.

Message: Sorry for being unclear. My Jeep is currently running the 4.0L I-6 with the 3 speed 32RH automatic transmission. A transmission specialist told me that the bell is the same housing (A999) as the newer overdrive models and will be a direct bolt in since Dakotas have a button select overdrive. I was looking for info and experiences on longevity as a potential future engine and transmission swap for my Wrangler. I will check the other boards offered above.

Message: I wouldn't call that a direct bolt in - it might bolt up, but the electronics are totally different. There is a lot more to this than just a button selected overdrive - that's a serious oversimplification.

Message: That tranny man probably doesn't know the new 5-45RFE's. That 4.0 is such an old engine design (taken from the old AMC 258 Inline 6). It may bolt to the 904/727/RE46 whatever. I've never tried but I bed those work. I know AMC used to be a blend of diff manufacture's parts!
I think some old one's my grandpa drove had them 258's and had I think Chrysler tranny's but stuff like FORD ignition systems! Funny.
Dude. Just go Big Block like Intense did. If you're going to do it, go BIG LOL!
