Message: I'm sorry but the 6 ton max is crap. I use my dakota for farm work and I have towed a 28ft loaded hay bale trailer (fully loaded weighs 11,500Ibs!!) And my 95 dakota with the 5.2l 318 pulled it fine.
I only did this stunt a few times (I also have a Ram 2500 8.0L V10)

Message: Nelson - lower gears do help, but you should still be fine there. Since cruise will deactivate when you touch the brakes, I don't see a problem using it. If your cooling system is in good shape, you'll be fine. I towed more than that with 3.55s with no problems. I have the roadmaster suspension like DSW, I've been happy with it. Like he says, there are different ways to handle the load - up to budget and personal preference.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: i wouldnt recommend cruise. if its a very flat terrain maybe but, when you hit a good size hill, and slow down, cruise likes to give it too much pedal. i used cruise once, and it down shifted to 2nd gear at 65 once. not a good thing.
