Subject: finding a thermostat '97 IP: Logged
Message: Where do I find the thermostat on a 97 dodge dakota with a 5.2?
I'm guessing the thermostat is the problem. It gets hot real fast (pegs out) then drops down 50 degrees. Moves back up and down over and over. The heater only blows hot when the temp is dropping.
Sound like I'm on the right track?

Message: Yep, you are on the right track. It is a sticky thermostat. The thermostat is mounted at the front of the intake manifold, on top (forward of the throttle body). There are 2 bolts holding the cover on, and there will be a 1 1/2" black hose coming off of it. Remove the bolts and the cover, and your thermostat is inside. Make sure you put the new on in the same way the old one came out. Don't get it backwards.

Message: Dan, the thermostat is an easy fix and pretty cheap to do yourself. I've swapped thermostats on my truck a few times, and the hardest part is actually cleaning off all the old gasket material since the 'stat is mounted in amongst the ac compressor and alternator. Take your time and get as much of the old gasket off as possible. Stuff a CLEAN rag in the hole while you clean so as not to get gasket pieces in the water passages.
IMO, don't bother with any of the "performance" thermostats. Just get a good off-the-shelf brand. The local parts store can get you whatever tempš of thermostat you want. T-stat, gasket, and a tube of RTV silicone will run you about $10-$15, and coolant is cheap, too. If you have a Haynes manual, it shows the proceedure pretty well if you've never done it before.
Good luck!

Message: you should also drain the coolant a little before you take anything off,I took a siphon and had no problems, not sure but on mine which is a 2002 has a cap on the upper radiator hose which makes it easy to siphon
