 Subject: Fuel Sender?

My fuel guage will work normal until about 1/4 to 1/2 full. Then, the next time I start the truck up, it reads empty, and the gas light comes on. By the time I make it to the gas station, the guage goes back up to 1/4 to 1/2 full. This has happened at the same guage level about three times in a row. Otherwise, the truck runs fine. Does it sound like the fuel sender? Is it a combination pump & sender, or is it possible to change just the sender? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's a 2002, V8-4.7L, QC, M/T.
