I talked to a friend of mine that makes drive shafts and he told me that he could not make me one for my dakota because it would be too long and would try to twist until it broke something. This is just my two cents.

I had an aluminum driveshaft made for my '94 Reg. cab short bed V8 and it vibrated like hell above 60MPH and amplified the "Mopar driveline noise" 10 fold. NOT WORTH IT!!!

I'm pretty sure that R/Ts have an aluminum driveshaft.. Hopefully someone else can confirm this...

00 CC and 03 QC both with aluminum drive shafts. They make the drive shafts out of aluminum because it's lighter than steel, since it's lighter they can build them longer than a steel unit, less rotating mass with aluminum. I also think they use the aluminum driveshafts so they don't have to use a 2 peice steel driveline with a carrier bearing in the middle.

I dented the drive shaft in my 00 and had to have a replacement built, $190 installed. Ran smooth as glass, better than the stock driveshaft. I lucked out and found a driveline shop that worked with aluminum, not all driveline shops do.

The length, tube diameter and weight of the driveshaft determine the driveshaft's critial speed, the RPM at which the drive line starts to distort, run off balance and possibly fly apart or damage other things. If you reduce the weight, aluminum instead of steel, the length of the shaft can be extended before the driveshaft meets it's critical speed. (Picked up the info when I had my drive line replaced :-)

Inland Empire in Southern California builds custom alumimum driveshafts incase you don't have a local driveline shop that specializes in aluminum.

The only probelm with aluminum driveshafts, if they get dented the aluminum fractures instead of just pushing the metal in. No fix to a dented aluminum driveline except replacing the driveshaft, found out the hard way.

Thanks,
I have a 04 QC and it does not have an aluminum driveshaft. I wonder if i can get hold of a 03 QC shaft to replace my steel one?

fastpastorq, Wierd that the 04 QC didn't come with an aluminum shaft, did you buy the truck new or used? I wonder if your steel driveshaft is a replacement.

When I replaced the shaft in my 00 I went to a driveline shop that was close to my house and they built a 1 peice steel shaft for the truck. Needless to say I had 1-2 months of vibration and multiple trips back to the driveline shop before I got totally disgusted and went to another place that put in an aluminum driveshaft,,, and resolve the problem.

From what the second driveline shop said, the length of a CC driveline is too long to be built out of steel, the long steel drive shaft has a relatively low critical speed compared to an aluminum driveshaft.

I would think a 00-03 QC aluminum driveshaft would work, maybe even a CC, they probably have the same wheel base and distance from the tranny to rearend.

When I had to replace my driveshaft I couldn't find a replacement from a boneyard. If you find one make sure it's perfect, no dents or scratches and that it comes with the tranny and diff yokes attached. If the yokes are not installed the driveshaft will most likely need to be balanced since the yokes must be installed to balance the shaft.

Are the steel QC - CC driveshafts stepped, first 6 inches or so a smaller diameter?
