 Subject: shaking steering wheel

I have a 97 with a 5.2 with 150,000 miles. when i get close to 60 mph i get a shaking in my steering wheel. also when accelerate i get a realy bad rattle that goes through the whole truck. It doesn't last very long. It starts about 2000 rpm's and only lasts a couple of seconds. I was wondering if anyone else has every heard of this. i have had the rear end grease checked and it is ok.

my mom had the same problem in her chevy tahoe....it ended up being the power steering pump....if that helps any.....

Finding a vibration can be difficult. You need to try an narrow down to either the chassis/suspension, or the drive line.
Place the trans in first, and run gradually up to 3500 rpm's. Repeat the process in second gear. If the vibration occurs in both gears, and the same rpm range, it's driveline related. Could be drive shaft, loose pulley, bent crank, trans, etc. Anything that rotates with engine speed.
If it's speed related, get it up above the speed that it normally occurs while on a long down hill slide. Place the trans in Neutral, and let the truck coast down below the normal speed that the vibration usually occurs. If it's still occuring at the same speed, then it's chassis/suspension. Out of balance wheel, bent rotor, worn steering, etc.
Good luck. And remember that it's usually a combination of things, rather than just one thing.

99 dak 5.2, similar thing happened to me, it would vibrate over 40mph, it ended up being the wheel bearing.
