Turn off your caps key and be thankful you get 13mpg. My 5.2L gets about 11-12 mpg.

Everyone complains about the mileage.
We also discuss this every few days, because people dont look back more than a few posts.

Dont get the spacer, they only seem to make a difference on the 4.7L

If you are getting 13mpg towing. Dont change anything because you are doing better than alot of people. If you had done your research to find out you had more towing power than the XL7, you should have seen the MPG stats in there.

Colder weather = worse mileage, wait till summer, and get an average. Also, dont let the thing warm up forever in the morning, thats what block heaters are for.

Get narrower tires. With the right ones, you can gain mileage, and keep the good look of the truck.

Most people gain with the K&N FIPK or equivalent.

Add a Black magic fan. People used to get the 150 but now I guess they make a 180 that works better because its larger.

I don't think i need the block heater, I live in
NC and it doesn't get that cold.I also have not checked mileage while towing, but all mileage checks have been in colder weather. Thanks for advise on the fan I will check into that.

stacy, you might want to try changing to synthetic oils in the engine, trans & diff. i personally don't use it. but a lot of people say it's worth it. keep your tires inflated properly and keep the truck in good tune with quality parts. i think we covered about everything.

I agree, just keep the vehicle tuned up and running good, including correct tire pressure.

I've come to the conclusion that they are gas guzzlers, so don't waste your money on expensive mods that you will never recoup in savings.

Hi,

I have a '97 Dakota 5.2L 4X4, and I was getting 13 MPG. I spent $200 on actual "truck plugs", K&N filter, new wires and cap, and had a complete "motor vac" service done, including injector and fuel rail cleaning, to try to make this vehicle easier on gas. Result - I now get 14 MPG....I think I'll give up on that one... have to get another 4 cyl 4X4!!

Id spend $200 for a couple miles per gallon..14mpg sounds great. Im stuck right at 12 or under now. With as much as i drive and theprice of gas...its ridiculous. But i still love my durango.

I like the synthetic fluid recommendation stated earlier. It will protect your truck better than conventional fluids and also help the gas mileage, though I wouldn't expect miracles. If I got +1 mpg with synthetics I would be real happy.

With full synthetics and a homebrew air intake I got a consistient 18-20MPG highway on my 00 CC Dakota, but this was the 4.7 which is more efficient than the 5.9.

I wouldn't dump a whole lot of money into gadgets trying to chase down .5 MGP, how long will it take to pay off a $300 air intake from gas savings? Well, at 13mpg and $2/gallon gas it might not take long ;-)

thanks for info. I think I'll do a few odds and ends but not to much money. I ordered new dist. cap and rotor today and I'm going to take the throttle body off and clean it really well.

Don't feel bad. I got the 4.7 and I only get 14 for my everyday driving which consists of a mix of highway and side streets in a city. I'm lucky to get 17.5 on strickly hiway travel miles.

Keep tires inflated, make sure your spark plug wires and spark plugs are good, I was told to make sure you use the recommended spark plugs. Synthetic motor oil/ATF-4/Rear Axel oil can help. You can also change your rear axel gear ratio (this is good, but it will change your towing ability). Somehow my 5.9 in my Dakota has been getting 15mpg, but I drive mostly hwy miles. Some tires have been getting raves on increasing gas mileage and maybe larger tires.
