Subject: Forget the T-5 - I'm goin' TKO500 IP: Logged
Message: After much research, it's been determined that it would be cost-and-time-prohibitive to try and fab all the parts necessary to get the Tremec T-5 into my 4.7/auto. By the time I have a custom bellhousing fab'd, rebuilt a T-5, harvested all the parts I'd need from a wrecked manual Dak, I'm just gonna buy the Keisler kit (including the auto-to-manual kit).
My next question is... does anyone have an opinion on which 1st gear (3.27:1 or 2.87:1)?
The 2.87 seems a little tall, but the gap between the 3.27 1st and the 1.98 2nd might be a little too wide.
Whaddya think?

Message: Depends on what you're going to do with it. If you're going to be towing, plowing, or engaged in significant off roading, that low first coupled with a 3.92 rear gear will really be handy. If it's strictly a street commuter, you'll probably be happier with 2.87.
Fortunatly, the 4.7 motor has a pretty broad/flat power band, so you don't have to worry quite so much about gear spacing.
Also, if you do the math, you'll discover that there's some diferance in first gear speed, but not as much as you might think. Lets assume a 31" tire, 3.92 rear gear, and a 2,500 rpm shift point. With the 3.27 gear, your speed will be 17.9 mph. With the 2.87 gear, your speed will be 20.4. Only a differance of 2.5 mph. Not enough to matter.
However, torque application will be differant. With the 3.27 gear, you FDR is 12.8. With the 2.87 gear, your FDR is 11.3. That gives the the 3.27 gear a 13% advantage.

Message: Correction:
The 2.87 gear is only in the TKO600 (6-speed), while the 3.27 is the only 1st gear ratio available with the TKO500. I don't need two OD ratios or the additional cost of the 6-speed, and Keiser won't substitute gear ratios, so it looks like it's gonna be 3.27:1.
Actually, I was hopin' that I could have a closer gap between 1st and 2nd, but this IS going to be a street cruiser, not a drag truck.
