I was wondering what all of you thought about cold air intakes. Ive been looking around and they are priced anywhere from $180 for a K&N to $40 on ebay for a no name product. Any advice???
Also is a CAI really worth the money or would a drop in filter work close to as well?

The Dakota already has cold air intake (from the wheel well).
If the diameter of the throttle body is less than the diameter of your existing intake tubing between air filter box and throttle body, the best return on your investment is a drop-in replacement air filter, and leave the rest of your intake system as is.

I bought a PowerShot from 360 a few weeks ago and installed it on my '04 4.7L. I didn't notice a change in anything except that my gas mileage DECREASED. In my opinion, a new air intake is not worth it. If I could turn back time I would not have bought it.

It's quite easy to fabricate a "homebrew" air intake. One of the best old posts is "What is the best intake?"

I have a 2000 4.7 4x4 and have read many topics on improving performance and also ways to try and get better gas mileage. I have also made a few mods myself (bed cover, k&n filter etc)

In most cases I think you will see money spent with little or no noticable increase in fuel savings.

I plan to just drive as is from now on.

If you make a few mods, headers, cat-back, intake, etc. you'll naturally drive the truck a little harder wiping out any increase in mpg that those parts might have added.

Stick with the bed cover and filter. Add a few more pounds of air to the tires and drive with the O/D off under 50mph.

I bought one those intakes off Ebay for 40 bucks from Bomz racing. They claimed it would fit Dakotas with the 4.7. The intake tube is worthless the nipple for the breather that goes into the airbox on the factory setup is to far for the provided hose to fit. The hole for the IAT is on the wrong side of the tube, the IAT sensor won't reach. The only thing useful is the airfilter. I then went down the hardware store and made my own for around 50 bucks. The one I built looks good and sounds great.

I think I'm going to keep the 360 on until the weather breaks. If there's no fuel mileage improvement then I'm going to sell the thing and put my stock back on.

The faster you can get cold air in your intake
and out the exhaust the more horsepower and more effecient the motor will run. Try blocking off
the inlet to a vacume cleaner and listen to the motor strain and bogg down trying to get more air, it's no different for a motor trying to get air through a restrictive inlet. The eaiser you make it for your motor to breath the more power you'll produce from the same motor. Using a Ram-air intake will force air into your intake at higher speeds and supply more air for the intake. Superchargers and turbo's work on the same idea but the forced air is under a boost and much higher output. Weather
you notice it or not, it's working ! -Mike

I drive a 96' 5.2 dakota and ive got a factory cold air intake that draws air right through the grill on the passanger side if i could get a bigger draw tube and t\b spacer it would definitly complement the cat back exhaust mod, i do agree w/ O\D off under 50 mph for gas milage. p.s. one more tip take the air draw tube off and put in and air filter for an 89 suburban (same diameter) and it will raise the air pan lid 1 inch, listen to the howl and hold w/ over drive off

Just put a CAI on my 97 rc w/318. I havent figured my gas mileage yet but I think it has increased just from seeing how many miles I drove and how much my guage moved. Another thing that I find pretty cool, is that when I floor it, the front end by the passenger side gets really loud. I used to be able to hear my exhaust (removed muffler) and it would make a "snapping" sound around 2800-3300 rpm. Now it doesnt do that. Just is really loud under the hood now. I like it.

You might not notice immediate changes because the truck needs to learn about the ability to suck down massive amounts of air through the CIA instead of sucking it through the OEM air cleaner. If modifications are made to the engine it takes a while for the truck to respond to the changes.

Last weekend I pulled my - battery cable while clearing a code, installing the homebrew air intake and later that day towed to the lake for first time with my 03 QC. Pulling several grades I thought this truck was gutless compared to my old 00 CC, but on the trip home the 03 QC had just as much power as the old 00 CC had. It took the truck 100 miles or so to relearn everything,,, including the homebrew air intake.
