Subject: Engine missing and rough idling problems IP: Logged
Message: I'm the second owner of a 2000 4.7L with 142,000 miles. When going up a slight incline the engine starts missing but if I stomp the gas it smooths out. It is also idling rough and the check engine light has come on. I tried a fuel injector cleaner but it didn't help. Do I need to take it to the dealer or what should I try next?

Message: Bring it to O'Reilys and have them do a free diagnostic check, the check enging light means you have stored info why it missed! That is a good thing,It may be as simple as a bad ignition wire. With the mileage you have that is most likely what it is, Or possably a cap and rotor issue! If you have multi misfire code or codes do a "complete" tune up If it gives you a code such as a "PO301" this indicates # 1 cylinder misfire If it is code PO302 it is cylinder #2 and so on..... then pull the spark plug on that cylinder and inspect it for fouling out replace it and the one pluge wire (under $20) if money is an issue. If not due the complete tune up. Hope this help you!

Message: It may possibly be the 02 sensor. If the sensor is telling the engine its running lean it dumps more fuel in than the engine can burn and may gum up your plugs which could cause a mifire. With that many miles however, your best bet is probably a full tune-up.

Message: My truck was having the same issues you stated above with the exception of the "Check Engine" light. Truck seemed down on power too. Took the truck in to the dealershipor diagnostic and they replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor. The sensor was intermittant.
