Message: I have a 96 4x4 with a 318 and close to 100,000 miles. It run great and gives most trucks a run for their money. But the last few months it got an oil leak. Front and rear mains! I have always wanted alittle more from it and was wondering how easy a 96-98 360 from a Ram would drop in?
Are the wiring the same?

Message: In the process of swapping out a 3.9 to a 5.9 in a '96 4X2 right now. The wiring will not be a problem for you except some of the sensor plugs have changed on the '98s and you may have to swap them with your old engine. Also beware of something that just bit me hard this weekend, watch for oilpan to crossmember space. Since I have a 4X2, I had to order an oilpan and sump tube for an R/T to get the engine back in place, you may not have this problem with the 4X4 since they changed the crossmembers for them.

Message: Just did the swap on a 95 Ram. Only had to have three different items.
1- 360 flexplate
2- 360 Torque converter
3- 360 PCM
Dakota may be different, but all other parts fit perfectly.

Message: Hey gang! I have a 96 Dakota 4x4 with 3.9L and auto tranny. It has a busted tranny and transfer case. (former owner). Since 42RE's are worse than gold, could you tell me what would be involved in changing it to a 44RH or 46RH setup. I'm new to Dakota so all help is appreciated,Stan

Message: The 318 to 360 swap for 93 - 01 is easy because the 318 and 360 have the same external dimension block and heads. Around 96 the EGR system was removed so you will need to reuse your intake and exhaust manifolds from your 96 engine. It is suggested to have your original PCM reprogrammed for thr extra cubic inches but the engine will still run. Make sure you get the flexplate for the 360 due to external balance on the 360 and internal balance on 318. There is no such animal for a 360 torque converter "none". The torque converter from a 44RE and a 46RE will not interchange. The 44RE came with 318's and 46RE came with 360's. The 44RE will hold up fine to a 360 and before you think of swapping the tranny to consider the 46RE is 3" longer. You will need the R/T oil pan in both a 2WD and a 4WD, and no the 318 oil pan will not fit a 360, and make sure you get the oil pickup tube as well.
E-mail me if you have any questions I have swapped a 318 for a 360 and a 3.9 for a 408. 2.5 guy far too many parts and mounts are different so that swap is not worth the hassle.

Message: i have a 1992 dakota with a 3.9 in it. bought a 1991 dakota with a 5.2 in it. i kept everything imaginable from the donor truck. is there a book or web site for step by step instructions on this swap? i only read parts and pieces all over the web.
lately i have been porting and polishing the intake and cleaning up the parts. but when its time i would like to have all the necessary parts for this install.
can i use the v6 motor mounts on the v8?- the eight is longer, so how does this work out?
also i have the 5.2 throttle body on my v6- can i use the 5.9 on the 5.2?
i have tons of questions thanks from another dakota owner.

Message: http://www.engine-swaps.com/ seems to be where lots of you will learn some of what you need and what parts will be needed.
Check out the oil pan. Check out tranny mount, I modified my mount with slots and drilled holes in frame for new postion.I am making my own motor mounts that will just go from the 318 straight to the frame rails.
Electric fan in front of rad. Had to grind lots out of the inside of grill and modified strap.
I have a 1988. Newer will need extra work (puter and other electric)

Message: The oil pan WILL fit from the 318 to the 360. I can prove it. I built a 360 for my 96 Dak and had to use the 318 oil pan and pickup tube. Also i used the 360 computer that came with the motor. This truck is four wheel drive. Also my NV3500 trans work great behind the 360. Trans has 230,000 miles on it too.

Message: There has been a lot of confusion on Oil Pans for the LA small block Mopars.
I put a 1981 360c.i. engine in a 1992 Dakota and had to learn the hard way because most of the information on the forums were wrong.
There are only 2 different oil pan rails. The front oil pan saddle is the SAME on all LA engines. The difference is on the size of the rear oil pan saddle.
The 273-318-340 engines all used forged cranks, the same size main bearings and had a smaller rear main saddle.
The 360 engine had a cast crank, used larger main bearings and had a larger rear main saddle.
When Chrysler redesigned the 318 into the MAGNUM, they increased the size of the rear main saddle to the same size as the 360. So ALL 5.2 and 5.9 Magnum engines use the same oil pan rails.
There are however 2 different styles of gaskets on these engines. The early, non-Magnum engine oil pans use a 4 piece gasket set. And the newer Magnum engine oil pans use a 1 piece gasket, which is far superior to the early gaskets. The Oil Pan determines if it uses the 4 piece or 1 piece gasket, not the engine.
All Magnum engine Oil Pans should interchange and use the 1 piece gasket. You just need to have the correct pan for the chassis, and I believe all Generation I Dakota pans should interchange.
If you want to install an early model 360 in a Dakota, no problem. Use the pan for a Magnum Engine in that chassis.
If you want to install an early model 318 in a Dakota, good luck. You’ll need an oil pan from a 1989 - 1991 non-Magnum 318 Dakota.
Here are the Oil Pan groupings:
Small rear saddle:
273 c.i. 1963 - 1969
318 c.i. LA 1964 - 1991
340 c.i. 1968 - 1972
Large rear saddle:
5.2 Magnum 1992 - up
5.9 Magnum 1993 - up
360 c.i. 1971 - 1992
(In other words - ALL 360’s)
Hope this helps,
Speedy Lee

Message: Guess I was wrong on the 318 to 360 oil pan. My
info was that the mains were larger so I used a
pan from the Dakota R/T on both my swaps.
The TB cable has a different end on it where it
connects up to the T/B itself. Mounts are the
same 3.9/5.2/5.9
Two wires can be added to the wiring harness of a
V6 to install a V8. Check on PCM compatibility
but a V6 cannot be programmed to run a V8.
I changed the two wire connector on the 98 to use
the older style 92-96 coils aftermarket coils.
The MSD coil failed and I grabbed a used one from
a 96 and it has been great, go figure.
