Message: ooops, theres goes another plenum gasket !
Disconnect the drivers side vacume hose goin from
the valve cover to the intake air manifold cap,
there should be NO or very little vacume present
at idle. Also remove intake air cap and look down
throttle body with flashlight, if you see motor
oil then you need to replace the plenum gasket
on your intake manifold. If in doubt then take
a pencil wrap the eraser end with a tissue- tape
it on, then swab down in the intake manifold in
all directions, if you see motor oil on the swab
then you know the gasket is blown. Your oil is
being burnt along with your fuel mixture so
it's all going out the exhaust/tailpipe. -Mike

Message: Bryan, If your oil is really clean it won't smoke,
my 5.2 was using a quart of mobil 1 every 1500
miles and I never noticed it smoking when my
plenum or belly pan gasket was blown. Also if you
have really clean oil you won't see it laying in
the bottom of the intake manifold, that's why you
have to swab around with a homemade large Q-tip
like i explained. Unless your 5.9 is different
than my 5.2, it's the drivers side valve cover
hose goin to the air hat, disconnected at the
air hat should be NO VACUME at idle or very very
little. If you have intake vacume on that hose
then your gasket is no doubt blown. Maybe somebody
else outhere has a 5.9 that could confirm this
better for you. Your oil has to be goin somewhere
and theres no leaks, unlesss it's in your cooling
system somewhere theres really no other place it
could be goin but out your exhaust. Besides it's
known problem with these motors. Swab it with a
white tissue then look at it and see if theres a
brownish stain on it smells like motor oil. Not
running of course ! Anybody with a 5.9 care to
there 2 cents in ? :) -Mike

Message: 01 R/T... yep. sounds like the belly pan, but could be other issues. mine went out slowly, and my R/T's consuming about 1 quart between every oil change. no leaks, no smoke. I'm in the process of modding the living snot out of a stock intake, porting polishing tuning runner length, and the most viable part, replacing the steel belly pan with a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum.
Hughesengines.com has a billet one for almost $80, but I decided to just buy a plate (not billet) and cut it to fit.... 7"X16" piece was $19.
The theory is that over time, since different metals expand at different rates, that, since the steel pan is closer to the engine it absorbs and holds more heat. this, combination of steel plate mounted to aluminum intake under vacuum causes the two parts to wiggle, as the engine is cycled hot to cold and eventually, it breaks the seal. only a little oil (usually as vapors and tiny droplets) gets sucked into the intake. (since its such a minor amount, and spread over time, its not going to smoke, and there may be very little noticable oil residue). its a pain to repair, as the intake has to be taken off to fix.

Message: Sounds like a well-thought out theory, but I think they just "under-designed" the gasket. The Mopar replacement gasket is metal reinforced, as it should have been.

Message: When my intake gasket blew my truck was under
warranty and took it to my local dodge dealership,
after they replaced my intake gasket a few days
later i noticed oil leaking in the area of the
distributer and dripping down the bell housing on
to the ground. Upon closer inspection i noticed
i could see the metal intake gasket pushed out
the back of the intake manifold by the
distributer ! Took it back and they did it over
again, since then it's been fine and the 5.2
dosen't leak or use a drop of oil. I think dodge
has a updated gasket they used. Theres no doubt
a bunch of people driving around with blown
intake gaskets (belly pan or plenum) and they don't even know it ! After the repair the truck
also runs stronger and much smoother through out
the whole power band. -Mike

Actually, the billet plates have been out for a couple years now. Both Hughes and APS sell their own kit. No problems reported by those who have used them. The intake is aluminum. The factory pan is steel. The reinforced gaskets from Mopar help a little, but the best solution is still a billet pan and a decent gasket. If you can afford it the M1 is the ideal solution. Better intake, no belly pan and it is a hell of a lot easier to work on the engine with it compared to the original kegger.

tryed the same with mopar part and found ,,much to my confusion,,that the new valve only let me blow one way....now i am really confused ,,i think....but anyways does anyone want to chime in and tell me what they think

Message: The Mopar part is working correctly. It's a spring loaded valve, it's only suppose to flow one way. The purpose is to evacuate the combustion gases from your crankcase. You don't want anything flowing into your crankcase. Heck, if they just wanted to apply vacuum to your crankcase without any kind of control, they'd of just run a hose without a valve.

Message: HEY EVERYONE.......
well i am going to get plenum gasket replaced monday morning.....i am going to my local chrysler dealer ...they have always steered me in the right direction.,,unlike dodge dealer which sucks here.
i did decide to do this becuase of the mileage of truck, 85000, and while they are doing this they want inspect all wirng and replace both upstream o2 sensors...i can do downstream myself...lol....hopefully they will find why i am gettin p0201,02,03,04,etc,etc codes.the shop foreman told me the job was goin to be 300-400 dollars plus cost of o2 sensors.is there anything else they should replace while doing the job.....i was thinking t-stat and short coolant hose under a/c compressor...????
does this price sound about right for dealer work?
arent they going to have drain a/c system also????
any pointers before monday morning will be app.
thanks again!
and thanks for being truthful on youre diagnosis of problem!
