Subject: Black Magic Extreme 180 install.. IP: Logged
Message: Flex-a-Lite exchanged my Black Magic 150 for their
new Extreme 180 electric fan and I have already
installed it.The new 180 has aprox. %45 more shroud covering the radiator and delivers 3300
c.f.m., verses the old 150 at 2800 c.f.m. The
install wasn't to rough, but for my 99' 5.2 Dak
I had to buy some longer bolts from the hardware
store and drill out the factory installed nuts
that are on the shroud to make it mount up right.
All my wiring was already done for the most part
because I already had the 150 installed before
so the whole install only took about 3 hours.
Cutting the universal brackets and drilling out
the shroud mounting nuts were the worst part of
the install but wasn't all that rough. After the
install was complete I fired up the 5.2 and proceeded to warm up the motor and adjust the
themostat. The first time the fan came on it blew
the 25 amp. fuse, so I wired it direct and it ran
fine. I called tech. support and they told me the
180 should have a 30 amp. fuse but some of the
very first ones were shipped with 25 amp. fuses
so i guess mine was one of them. Anyway I bought
some 30 ampers and tried them but after 4 or 5
start up's they would also blow. So I had to buy
a 30 amp. fuse holder and go to a 35 amp. fuse
instead of the 30. When this motor starts up it
must draw slightly over 30 amp's at first for a
few seconds, since Iv'e went to the 35 amp fuse
I haven't blown one yet so either my 180 is
drawing a but more than normal or Flex-a-lite
should be using 35's instead of 30's. The new 180
isn't as loud as the 150 when running and so far
does seem to cool faster than the 150, but I
really won't know for sure until the weather get's
hot again. I will update any good or bad reports
on the new 180 Extreme. -Mike

Message: What's the deal with them exchanging your old 150 for the new 180? I have a 150 and wouldn't mind a newer model. ;) So the 180 doesn't mount up like the 150 (using the brackets on the top and bottom of radiator)? I'm sure I can figure it out but just wondering. Thanks for the information.

Message: DeepDak, I had my old 150 for about 8 months and
was in touch with Flex-a-lite tech. support through out the whole time. The 150 wasn't quite
enough cooling for my 99'5.2 when the outside temp. got in the upper 90's moving slow in traffic
with the a/c on. So, they kept telling me they were coming out with the new 180 extreme and that
it should be big enough to cool the 5.2, so i asked if when they came out with it would they
credit me for my 150 if i bought a new 180 from
them. They accepted my offer and overnited me a
brand new 180 ! It was all done between the auto. parts store i bought the 150 from along with my
recepit and flex-a-lite. Install is pretty much
the same but you'll need a trip to the hardware
store for a few bolts, washers, nuts if you mount
it the way i did. Be glad to email some pic's of
how i mounted it and all the details if you want.
It ended up mounting up nice tight and clean install, but having to use 35 amp. fuses instead
of 30's kinda bothers me. It does no doubt cool
the 5.2 down faster than the 150 did and is not
as loud. Give Flex-a-lite a call, they might work
with you their a great company that stands behind
their product ! 1-800-851-1510 tech. support.
They worked with me and for another $80 and my
old 150 they sent me the new Extreme 180. -Mike

Message: Thanks for the information and please send and pics to my email address! My 150 is about 3 years old and I also have problems cooling when temps get around 100. Unfortunately, I never called the company to complain, I just dealt with it. Thanks for the info!

Message: Eli, I don't have your email addresss but mine is
mdangels@yahoo.com if you email me i'll be glad
to send you pix and all the details of what you'll
need if you install it like i did. I really can't
recommend the 180 to anyone yet, it's still in the
testing stages and it hasn't gotten hot here yet.
But it does cool the 5.2 down faster than the 150
did that's for sure. -Mike

Message: Mike D., Have you talked to tech support about the fuse blowing problem? They claim that the 180 draws no more than 18 amps and there's probably a surge on startup but, I think it's suppose to startup at 60% and go gradually up to 100% as long as the temperature is above the preset. It sounds like your fan is starting up at 100%. You might want to check your installation again since you said that you pretty much used the existing 150 setup and substituted the 180 plus some minor stuff. Maybe, the 180 installation is significantly different? I don't know, just a thought. It's hard to believe they would be 10 amps off on the fuse requirement, it sounds like it's drawing too much current somehow.

Message: Rob C, I know what ya mean, It bugs me that I'm
blowing the 30 ampers, and I have talked to tech.
support and we agreed to give the motor a break-
in period and then i'll try the 30 amp. fuses
again. I'm not the only one who has blown the 30
amp. fuses, as soon as i mentioned the fact that
i was using the 150 25 amp. fuse he said that the
180's were supposed to shipped with 30 amp. fuses
and others were blowing fuses also, apperently
the first 180's shipped had 25 amp. fuses and now
they come with 30's. If i use a 30 amp. fuse it
blows after a 4 or 5 start ups but iv'e never
blown a 35 yet so it's drawing slightly over 30
amps on start ups. All the 150 wiring is the same
size wiring that the 180 comes with so everything
is the same as far as wire guage goes and my 150
was starting up fine. I have everything wired exactly like their wiring diagram and all connections are sound. Tech says after the break in period if I'm still blowing 30 amp. fuses they want to amp. draw test my motor. I would like to
hear back from anyone who has a 180 xtreme installed if there any of you out there ? -Mike
