Subject: NO START ON 90-91 DODGE DAKOTA IP: Logged
Message: I need help really bad!!! The Truck has not started in a few months. My husband figured it might be the starter. We took the starter out and the nose of the starter block was broken. Would this have cause the truck not to turn over? We tried to replace the starter with a 90 and 91 starter but neither one would work. Now, it did try and engage but didn't reach the flywheel to do soo. Can someone PLEASE help. We are soo broke and are trying to find and easy way out before sending it to the junk yard.
Thanks So Much

Usually a broken nose cone is caused by the starter bolts being to loose or a cracked flywheel. Take the starter to a junkyard and buy a used starter, BUT HAVE IT TESTED FIRST. If they dont test it take it to AutoZone or Advance and they will test it for free. If you do have the money price a starter out first.
Make sure the battery has a good charge and wires are connected. Let me know.

Message: with the starter off did your husband try to turn the motor over by hand?
also with starter off with a light look in the starter hole on the trans to see if the teeth on the flywheel look OK,BROKE,MISSING,GROUND-UP etc
the starter from a 88-96 will work, once you know the starter is good, you can check the starter yourself with booster cables, hook the boosters to the battery, with starter off lying on the ground hook the neg- cable to the starter, now hook the pos+ cable to the large post on the starter
[becareful not to touch the stater its self with pos]now with a screw driver jump across the large and small post on the starter, starter should engage and turn,
when the starter is on the truck if it does,nt engage and turn over, battery maybe low charged, starter relay may be bad,bad connection on battery etc
sorry for the long post, hope this helps
