Sup all, need alittle help, I have a 89 Shelby Dakota v-8 and it has a 4 speed auto in it, I had to pull the trans pan and valve body to replace a seal and pan gasket, someone told me that the bands needed to be adjusted, can someone tell me how to go about that so I can do it while the pan is off.

You really should get a manual, because, there are torque values you need for your particular transmission. There is 1 adjustment you need to do when your trans pan is off, and the other adjustment is on the outside of the pan on the side of the transmission.

To do it properly you will need a inch pound torque wrench. First loosen the adjuster locknut a bunch then torque the adjuster screw to 72 inch pounds. Then back off the adjuster the required ammount. This figure I don't know because they changed from yr. to yr. Also you didn't state which OD trans. you have. The A500 rear band adjustment is quite different than the A518. If you don't have a torque wrench and there wasn't alot of shavings in the pan and the trans. was shifting good you can cheat and just adjust each (the rear and the forward) adjuster screw in about 1/8-1/4 turn. This will make up for normal wear. Don't go more than 1/4 turn because too much will cause bind up and will destroy the trans. FAST!! Hold the adjuster screw with a 5/16 wrench and tighten the locknut securely and your done.
