Make sure your tow haul switch isn't messed up plus inspect your trans temp sensor since od dosn't drop in till trans reaches certain temp. check connection on tps to.

Tow/haul button is on the end of the transmission lever. When on the trans doesn't use od for towing purposes. the temp sensor is on the trans somewhere I'd have to look on mine to find it, not sure of exact location but I'm sure I could find it if you still need help.

Im sure it does, r/t would be somewhat high end. The ecm must have some way of knowing the trans temp, maybe it uses coolant temp sensor and transfers via trans cooler lines. I doubt it though, when you turn your key on and all the dash lights light up theres a light that says trans temp isn't there? Im just making suggestions, I would investigate wiring and connections on tps sensor, trans temp sensor, etc. dont go to great expenses on my suggestions, these are all just simple things you can try your self. Also try disconnecting battery for bout 5 mins to cancel check engine light. If the light comes back on then the problem still exists then check all the things I mentioned before. Try battery first. Does your cruise control work?

Hi Guys,

I have the same issue with my 91 5.2 (199K) I've replaced the TPS and speed sensor with no luck. Since it has been acting up, it has very briefly, and only for a few seconds at a time, locked into OD. I've ordered a transmission solenoid from NAPA and will let you know the results.

... thats why i drive a stick. I think the best suggestion and one not stated for some questionable reason is to simply take it to a dealership and have em hook it up to a computer. will cost a pretty penny but it's better than buyin random parts and checkin random doodads. plus if they can't figure it out then nothin can. my dads '99 with a 318 v8 had that problem for a while. dealership fixed it in an hour and a half.

Could be a blown fuse. Check the fuse box inside the truck. My dad has a 2001 Dodge Ram with 318 and automatic trans. Every once in a while it will blow this fuse and the overdrive will not work until it is replaced. The first time it happened I was relatively certain he had not done anything to tear up the overdrive or the transmission. I stopped uptown to ask a friend of mine about it who is a mechanic. That was the first thing he checked and found the blown fuse. Not sure which one. When it happens, I just check fuses until I find it.

The digital gear shift indicator on the instrument panel is rotating over all the different gears (just the indicator), transmission not actually changing gears. The transmission is also not changing gears properly

I always thought that a A500 was just built better than the HD 518. Years back I remember I test drove an '96 Dakota V6 ext cab for the whole day, and never did it miss a shift nor was it ever indecisive while shifting.

You are correct in the fact that the a500 is better. it is better due to the fact that it has stronger planatary gear sets and slightly better clutches. all the electronics and seals are virtually the same. if you get it rebuilt by someone that knows their stuff the aftermarket world has taken care of the stuff factory messed up on. thats why if you take it to get rebuilt no one buys the mopar rebuild kit. cause mopar gives you all the same crap that was in it the first time so it will simply fail again.
