Subject: Trans question..PLEASE HELP IP: Logged
Message: We've got a 91 Dakota 318 with an automatic transmission that when it is put into drive or reverse it acts like the convertor is locked up and kills the engine. Is there a way to tell whether it's the convertor or could it be the computer telling the convertor to lock up?

Message: Sounds like what mine was doing. Ended up having a cracked valve body so fluid was getting through and locking the converter. I took mine to a reputable trans shop and they drove it, then it was pulled apart and the crack was confirmed.

Message: Your car was dying like a stalled 5speed car when you put it in drive or reverse? and how would a crack in the valve body lock the converter up?

Message: slow turbo-it is not the converter that is the problem. the valve body crack allows the forward and reverse clutches to engage at the same time, causing the transmission to bind up and overload the engine causing it to stall.

Message: I can push the truck and get it moving and put it in drive and it will run until i stop, then it dies again. How would the valve body cause it to bind and stall and still be able to drive if it gets in motion?
