Subject: Black Magic 150 using stock fan cowling IP: Logged
Message: I replaced my stock fan /clutch with a Black Magic
150 last year. When the weather gets around 100 degrees or so the fan dosen't quite cool enough
when sitting still or goin up a long slow grade.
The Black Magic 150 cowling is much smaller then the stock cowling, I was wondering if anybody has
tried to mount the Black Magic 150 to their stock
fan cowling ? I think this might cure the problem
because the fan would be drawing air through the
whole radiator instead of only about 2/3 the way
it is now with the smaller cowling. If Anybody attempted this I would like to hear from. -Mike

Message: I havent tried it, but, I dont think its possible without alot of modification to the shroud.
The stock shroud come alomost all the way to the engine. If you were to mount the black magic fan to the end of the shroud, it would hit the water pump.
You could remove the black magic fan from its houseing and somehow mount it in the stock shroud, but there would be alot of clearance between the outside of the fan blades and the shroud. This would allow air to come in from around the back of the shroud, decreasing the amount of air going through the radiator.
I think there are three options for ya.
1) Install the stock fan. I personally didnt gain anything with the electric fan, and if I had your problem, thats what I would do.
2) replace the 150 with a larger single or the twin fan setup that some people have installed.
3) Move the 150 all the way to the passenger side of the radiator, and install a "push" style fan from the newer v-6 in front of your AC condensor all the way to the drives side of the radiator. Place it on its own thermostat.

Message: Mike D, Flex-a-lite now makes a model designed specifically for the 4.7L Dakota. It's the model 180 Extreme S-Cyclone fan. It pulls 3300 cfm and comes with a large shroud that's suppose to fit over the radiator.
http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/180_black_magic_x-treme.html
BTW, the application guide doesn't show it fitting your truck because the application guide is from before the 180 was in production but, you can email them to confirm the application and they'll get right back to you.

Message: Crow318, Thank you for your reply .... I think it
would be fairly simple to remove the shroud on the
150 and remount my stock shroud to the 150, but
after you brought up the fact that the fan diameter would be much smaller than the opening in
the stock shroud it probly would cut down the
efficiency to much to be effective. I might still
attempt it anyway ! Gotta disagree with ya on not
noticing any difference switching over to an
electric fan. I was one of the most noticeable
mod/improvement I've made on the truck so far !
The stock fan was a 20 pound 9 bladed monster
clutch fan. Since switching to electric the 5.2
winds up quicker and has noticable faster acceleration, and also you don't hear the wine
of spinning that monster stock fan. Oh, and I
also picked up 1 M.P.G., now I'm getting 15 !
whoopee ! ......Thanks -Mike

Message: Rob C, and all that replied to this thread, ..
Looks like Rob C get's the cigar on this one !
I called flex-a-lite maker of the 150 and talked
to tech. advice, looks like their willing to take
my old Black Magic 150 back in return for a new
model 180 extreme giving me full credit for my old
150 ! So for another $70 I'll be getting the 180
extreme ! Great company to do this for me considering I've had my 150 for almost 1 year !
The new 180 should do the job, heres a few numbers if anyone cares ...
99'DAK 5.2 radiator size is 22"x23"
Black Magic 150
Shroud size : 16"x19"
2800 c.f.m
180 extreme
Shroud size: 22"x18"
3300 c.f.m.
Hopefully the bigger shroud size and the extra
500 c.f.m. will be enough, the 150 wasn't quite
enough but was fine for most conditions except
90+ degree heat moving slow. Thanks for all that
replied to this thread ! I will post results after
installing/testing the new 180 extreme. -Mike
