Subject: 99' 5.2 timing chain question IP: Logged
Message: Was wondering if anybody knows if the newer magnum
motors have metal or nylon timing gears ? I had a

made from nylon and broke apart at 70,000 miles !
My 99' Dak 4x4 ext. cab 5.2 has 62,000 miles on it and I was wondering when the recommened mileage
to replace timing chain and gears ? -Mike

Message: The gears are metal, no nylon. I changed the set on mine when I changed the cam, OE looked great had about 48k on it.

Message: Thanks for the info. ! I talked to my local Dodge
dealer and found out that there is a timing chain
inspection called for at 104,000 miles, but he
also said that the newer 5.2 engines don't have
timing chain or gear problems so I'm not goin to
be concerned about it for now. Maybe when i get
close to 104,000 miles I'll install a nice lil'
mild cam and do the timing gears and chain too !
-Thanks Mike

Message: I had a water leak and had to take that cover off at about 105k on my '97 (same as 99). I replaced the gears and chain because I was there. I brought it to my mechanic, and he said that based on the mileage on them, at least 20k to 30k. I know thats a big range, but he was just looking at them (no measuring)
