Subject: Shorty headers install IP: Logged
Message: I have had these Pacesetter shorty headers for over a year now, and have finally decided to go ahead and replace the stock exhaust. However, my question is aimed more at these shorty headers: Will shorty headers bolt right onto the factory exhaust piping once they're bolted to the heads? This is so I can drive it to the exhaust shop and have them install my new muffler and catalytic converter, and save me some money on install labor!
Thanks,
Kris

Message: Not sure about new cars but all the headers I've installed on old cars do not bolt up to the existing exaust. They will bolt to the head but not the rest of the exaust pipes. They usually sit a bit lower. I just drove to the exaust shop with open headers. Just don't try stopping at the McD's drive thru on the way. Had to shut off the car so people could hear their order. Real pain in the ass but pee your pants funny.

Message: My Dakota has the 5.9L motor and I have a set of Pacesetter shorty headers waiting for install. I just couldn't tell if they would reach the stock Y-pipe or not, so if I must drive with open headers to the muffler shop I guess that's what I'll have to do :)
I've been quoted 5 hours to remove/replace the headers at one place and about $400 at another place. I think it's in my best interest to do it myself.
Should I buy new gaskets, or can I use the existing ones?
Thanks for the responses!

Message: Your best source for fit information is the dealer that you bought them from or the manufacturer. As a rule, there is no reason to make "shorty headers" unless they are intended to fit up to the stock exhaust system. Some fit up perfectly and others (cheapies) do not.
It always makes good sense to replace all gaskets, even if the vehicle is almost new.

Message: I was eyeballing my stock headers and the shorty headers and they just don't look to be the same length to the Y-pipe. But, it's really hard to tell. I guess when I finally do them I'll know for sure.
Thanks for the help.

Message: You could also get a good estimate if you shape some metal coat hangers into the shape of the new headers then put the coat hangers up to the manifolds. It won't be exact but it might give you a good idea if it will be close or way off.

Question:
I purchased a set of shorty headers for my 2000 Dodge
Dakota 4x4 w/5.9L engine. Will these headers bolt onto
the factory exhaust piping without any modifications?

Message: I bought some of those and they didn't fit right,so I called the place I bought them and they said they didn't understand why they don't fit and sent me new ones.Ofcourse those didn't fit either. It's not that they don't match up with the Y pipe it was the fact that they hit the upper control arm on the rightside, so I sent them back and called Headman and got what I wanted and they fit great.....

Message: do not use tape unless this is a race only vehicle!!!!! Tape will cause your pipes to rot out very quickly if driven in the rain, snow, or high humidity areas!!!!!!
And you wouldn't want that now would you????
Besides in a street car the price v. benefit sucks!!

Message: I also bought a set of Pacesetter for my 93 that were supposed to be a direct replacement for the manifolds and bolt right up to the y pipe. Just like Woodrow said, they didn't fit exactly right. Not only did mine hit the right upper control arm but they were about a half inch off from bolting up to the y pipe.
Put them on anyway and drove straight to the muffler shop open. WOW!!! Was that loud. My ol lady heard me get on it 1/2 mile in front of her with her windows up.
Ran true dual exhaust with no cat and it ran quite better. No dyno #'s but I'd guess 20 plus HP.
Only mistake was I wrapped them. 5 yrs. later they are rotted out. Bummer.
NEVER WRAP STREET HEADERS!!!

Message: Well, I tackled this project last night. I started with the passenger side and ran into zero problems along the way. The header bolted right up and ran right into the stock Y-pipe. Total time to complete the passenger side was 1.5 hours.
Driver's side is a bit different. The major problem I'm having is getting the Y-pipe to bolt up to the header properly. It's tweaked to the left a bit. I know I can get it done, it's just taking longer than anticipated.
So far, I have not yet ran into fitment issues that concern external suspension parts, plumbing, etc. They pretty much fit right on and the bolts don't give too much trouble screwing into their holes. Although, on a couple spots it would have been nice to have an allen head bolt for ease of reaching it...

Message: One more thing to note. On the driver's side there is one pipe that is pretty close to the brake booster. That particular area will need to be heat wrapped to prevent any ill effects from too much heat. I only plan to wrap about 3" worth of the header.

Message: Hey Kris,
Instead of wraping your header, try taking a peice of sheet metal and make a heat sheild,or go to motorcycle shop and get one.Just a thought..
Glad everything worked out.
