1. Remove the oil filter.
2. Start the engine.
3. Check for oil everywhere.
That's how I would do it.

Message: The safest way is to hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge. Obviously if your engine hasn't locked up then the pump is at least circulating oil. If it wasn't pumping anything it would take only a few minutes to destroy your engine. just ask some of the 4.7L owners that have had theirs fail on the road. Usually when the pump goes bad you either have a major mechanical failure in the pump gears, pump body or the pressure spring simply breaks causing low oil pressure. Most commonly though is a clogged pick up spring whcih will starve the pump.
