Message: First of all, anyone who speaks in such generalizations cannot really be taken seriously. All Dodge engines suck? Please. This is as ignorant as saying all Japanese engines suck. Personally, I prefer American engines. Let's not forget the spectacular 2.2 turbo that Dodge built in the early 90's....some 224hp. I believe that was a record for hp/liter? Oh, and smooth as silk. The Japanese learned well from people like Howard Hughes when they copied his air racer, armed it, and made the "Zero." Their industrial complex was rebuilt thanks to General Douglas Macarthur, who lived in Japan after WWII and personally supervised the rebuilding process. They've been beating themselves crazy trying to copy the Harley mystique. The Japanese are great at looking back and using things like those little speed-sensitive spoilers in a market that has nothing better to offer. Back when this item appeared on a Detroit car in a US car show (in the 60's), it was a neat trinket, but who'd want it? Nobody did back then. I'm not saying the Japanese can't create things, they can, and they're very good at marketing and responding to customer needs. The Hemi? Dodge didn't invent it, but they did perfect it. The Deusenburg Brothers came up with the Hemi back in the 1920's. And the Hemispherical term, as it applies to engines, refers to the shape of the cylinder head, as in 1/2 of a sphere. It has nothing to do with the "V" configuration. By virtue of it's design, Hemi's breathe like no other. The whole Magnum deal is actually the pinnacle of the LA cylinder head design. Does anybody wonder why nobody else makes Magnum heads or intakes? Industrial patents. It's marketing and control. This control will lapse soon. Is it any wonder the 318/360 Magnums are history? The last of the pre-Magnum heads are capable of adding 55 hp out of the box....just like Magnum heads. They changed their bolt patterns, and tweaked the ports a bit more. These changes put Dodge back in control of the profits. Harley-Davidson did the same thing with the 88 Twin Cam engine a few years ago. Has anyone looked at the cam specs for the Hemi? A 360 Magnum with that cam would make a good accounting. The Hemi would still have better high rpm HP numbers, so basically it'd be like the 426 Hemi vs the 440 Magnum. Oh, something else about Japanese engines. Anybody remember the Aries "K" car (1980's)? An early option was the 2.6 liter "hemi." It was a Japanese engine, and we all know what a legendary engine it was......? We are all cogs in the machine. Oh, and around here, sushi has a more common name....bait!

Message: I distinctly remember the aforementioned 2.2 being hailed as a record-setting engine regarding hp/liter output. What came afterwards...well, you know what they say about coming in second place.....If the so-called authorities in the car mags were wrong, well Hell, I can't know everything.
Know what? A Viper engine is also more powerful than the new Hemi, and it's a modified wedge head. An F-22 engine is a lot more powerful than all of them. The frickin' space shuttle kicks all of their asses....when it isn't exploding. What's your point? Given time, effort, money, and copying and/or improvement of a given technology, ANYONE can one-up a given example of something. Standing on the corner yelling, "My dick is bigger than yours," accomplishes nothing.

Message: thats true..but both the viper and the hemi are not great examples of hp per liter output.
there are quite a few 450-500hp cars out there and non of them need 8.3 liters to get it.
how about GMs votec 4200...that is a powerful engine for its size.
i got pulled on by an envoy the other day..i was like wtf(although I would have been even with him with an empty car and if i launched hard)

Message: Look, there's a reason Hemi's don't run at Indy, or at least not the Hemi as most know it. There are modified hemi-style 4-valve heads, some called pent-roof, which is kinda a flattened hemi. Itty bittys running 30, even 60 lbs of boost will probably always dominate IRL, Indy, all that. Their design is great for that. There's also a reason why they have never been run in Top Ruel Dragster. These engines are based on the 1964 Hemi design. Take all that stuff off, and a torqueflite will still bolt up to it. Two different worlds in the same universe. GM has done a great job with their new stuff. Just look at Mazda with that new Wankel engine (whick stomps the crap out of all piston-powered passenger vehicle engines in the measure of output vs displacement. Who'd have thought that the Buick 3.8 V6 would've become such a commodity and the preferred weapon of Mustang killers? Point is, man, we have so many choices. You have your prefs, I have mine. It's the same principle that says we'd probably never bang the same chick (sorry girls, this is guy talk.....) Well, we might want to, maybe even test drive, so to speak. I have fun with my little 4-banger, but I love, in particular, Mopar V8's. We had Cruisin' the Coast recently, and I was in heaven on earth just hearing all those rumpity-rump hot rods (all makes, not just Dodges). Look, we line up. I win. You go back, tweak, then you win the next one. And so it goes. Do I get mad, insult you and everything you like? Do I go off and pop a cap? Hell no. I go back, tweak, and wipe that smirk off your face a couple weeks later. I'm not all love, peace, and flowers. There are times to fight, but this ain't it. Win or lose, isn't it fun?

That guy on the auto show, can't remember the name, but he has the long curled mustache, comes on sundays, anyway, he's been covering the event for a while now. Fun night action. Lasts a week. Lots of burnouts. We line the streets and watch for cops, but they don't get too bad unless things get too rowdy. It's become a regular vacation event for lots of cruisers. Great fun.

Message: I think you made my point. Don't those IRL/Indy guys run on alcohol? That's water compared to Nitro. Anyway, the point is that a CART engine can make 950hp, but you wouldn't pull a 10,000lb trailer with it. It's not always about HP per liter. Torque is what we drive, not HP.
You forgot Pro Stock. Also 500 inch maximum. 2 carbs, single cam, two valves, dual carbs, naturally aspirated. What are they up to now? About 2,000 hp on racing gas?

I want a little Jap car with decals all over it, a puffy seatbelt cover, a dash mounted tac that takes up half the window, and a giant spoiler that does absolutely nothing. It will also have a after market exhaust that makes it sound like a radio controlled car. Of course when I get it I'll have to drive like a crazy a$$hole and dye my skin a yellow color. But you have to do what you have to do.
