Subject: Belt squealing horribly on 86 chevy 305 IP: Logged
Message: I tell you: This jewel is about to drive me up the wall. This trk has a/c, p/s, p/b. Its a 305 chevy small v-8. I put a whole set of belts on this thing and it still squeaks to high heaven. How can I find out what's wrong without the humiliation of taking it to my local shop. Seems a man ought to be able to figur this out for hisself. Any views on this from ANYBODY? Sure would appreciatate it. Bless you all on this forum.

Message: well, the first problem is it's a chevy! LOL just kidding. check to make sure that the pulleys all line up and none are wobbling. if the pulleys are a little rusty in the grooves, clean them up with fine sandpaper or steel wool. that should do it. don't use belt dressing. all that does is make a mess.
P.S. ignore the flames that are about to follow.

Message: I have the same problem, looked at this old
thread, and to me it looks like the most likely
cause is a bad tensioner, if it's like mine, you
can put a wrench on it and it will loosen the
belt. It also keeps the belt tight. Well mine is
all old and crusty, and isn't keeping the belt
tight and squeals a lot, and is visibly loose, you
can see it moving up and down. So I gave the
tensioner a couple of whacks with the hammer. I
could feel it move, then started the truck up. Now
it's running smooth with no squeals. It may need
replacing soon, but at least it will work for a
while now without that annoying squeal :)
