I have an 02 dakota quad with the 5.9 engine. After a 100,000 mile complete srevice, the engine began to "ping." My mechanic's scanner showed no problems. The dodge dealer said that the oil pick-up screen may be clogged but I had complete transmission oil filter and gasget change. He also said that there may be a deteriorating valve cover gasket and the pinging could be caused by "blow-by." Trusting my mechanic more than the dodge boys I thought I'd ask other owners if they have heard of a similar problem. Engine now has 128,000 miles with no loss of oil, power or fuel mileage. Thanks for any responses. Keith

pinging and a clogged oil screen, deteriorating valve cover gaskets and blow-by have absolutely nothing in common. pinging is a fuel/octane/timing issue. may I suggest installing plugs that are 1 step colder. A lot of people, including myself have claimed that switching to Autolite 3923 plugs stopped the pinging.

You may have some carbon buildup in the cylinders..Try squirting some water into the throttle body while the engine is running..You'll need to rev the engine to keep it from dying from the injected water..

Do this as many times as needed to stop the pinging.. The water will give the hot cylinders and valves a steam cleaning..
