Subject: Frustrating Brake Problem (CW) IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota /w 4WABS, 34,500 miles on it. I have had this frustrating brake problem for the last 20,000 some on thousand miles. It's been to the dealer, written letters to the zone representative, and they just say everything is fine. I do have Raybestos pads and shoes on it, and they say aftermarket pads/shoes make the brakes feel different (Total BS).
Anyways, onto the symptoms:
1) Slow pedal return - Every other car/truck I have tried has an almost instantaneous pedal return when you let your foot off. I take about 1-2 seconds to fully return.
2) Pedal goes to floor during normal braking - In a normal stop (From whatever speed), I can put the pedal all the way to the floor. In the meantime, the car is still rolling.
3) Panic stopping - When going to panic stop, if you press on the pedal real fast, the pedal gets hard to push down, and you can feel about a second before the brakes kick in.
4) Pedal falls away - Sometimes, I'll have a low pedal, and it'll seem firm up top, and then you press on the pedal, and it falls away.
I first suspected air, but the dealer has done a flush on the brake fluid, and to no avail, NOT fixed the problem. What are ya'll suggestions for getting this fixed? Could there still be air trapped up, ABS unit internal leak, master cylinder leak, combination valve? How do I go about explaining this to the dealer? I'm to the point of paying for all this upfront, and then going after Chrysler for valid warranty claims that weren't filled, and possibly more.
Thanks
william

Message: I would be alot more suspect of the master cylinder myself. My dad had his jeep that the pedle would go to the floor. Same type of deal.

Message: Sounds like the master to me too. Had a 68 Barracuda, the master was so shot it wouldn't pump up any more, but it would catch if you stabbed the pedal quick. Similar to all you are describing except no delay for the brakes to kick in after that.

Message: I would agree with the Master Cylinder. The truck of a buddy of mine, who is a mechanic, does the same thing. He says its the Master Cylinder.

Message: Dude it is defenitly your master cylinder the spring there is probably weak and tell the dodge place to replace it Fight with them because they are just waiting till your warranty runs out and then they will tell u it is a master cylinder. It is not expenssive it runs about 40-100 $

Message: tell your dealer that you believe the vehicle is not safe. go on a test drive with their top tech and show him the exact conditions and time you have problems. they can replace the master cylinder if the tech believes there is a problem with it, and chrysler warranty will cover it. they might have to b.s. documentation to chrysler to get it done too. you may have more than a brake problem. if there was a problem with the abs, it would set a abs light. you may have a base brake problem, such as hardened master cylinder seals and weak spring.
p.s. brake pads do make a difference, such as heat tolerances and wear life.

Message: Two mechanics (one at the dealer) have told me that Dodge designed the Durangos (mine is a 2000 quad cab) with brakes that are too light duty. I think your brakes are just wearing out.

Message: like they said! the master cylinder!!! i just the same problem, but come to find out the dual exhaust was banging on the rear brake lines and bust the left driver side. after i replaced it and bled the brakes everything was fine. also see if your rear brakes need to be adjusted!! i had that problem with mine too recently and they are only 2 months old.
