I have a 2001 Dakota SLT with the 4.7 V8. Recently when I hit the starter the engine turns over just fine but does not start. A second try at starting and it starts right up. Seems like a lack of fuel (like no choke or accelerator pump on an old engine). this problem is very repeatable. Any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is since you have fuel injection you rely on fuel always being there for the injectors and your fuel pump may be allowing the fuel to return back to the gas tank some. Try this, when you turn on the ignition wait about 5-10 seconds before trying to start it. This may give you enough fuel pressure to start the 1st time. You may also try some fuel injector cleaner (The Good Stuff about $4-$6). There is some new stuff out by Prestone that I tried and found a difference in the 1st tank full. Just a suggestion. Good Luck!!!

Even though the problem was found mostly in Jeep Grand Cherokees, it is possible you are experiencing bleed-off at the pressure line from the fuel pump. As noted by Red99Dak, try turning the key to the on position (to actuate the fuel pump) a time or two BEFORE you actually start the engine. If this helps, you may need a new fuel pump or a seal kit for the fuel pump you have now.

your injectors are controlled by your pcm module. you might want to reset your pcm. just take the positive wire off your battery , and turn the ignition key to on, but dont start the engine , then turn it off and put the battery cable back again see if this work is quick easy and inexpensive. If you installed an upgraded pcm .. then your problem is right there.
