Message: I keep reading that chips hinder towing? How so? I saw the dyno curve for the jetchip for the 4.7 and horsepower was significant, but they don't show torque.
I live and drive about 5500 feet, and am looking for a little more power.I have the airaid intake filter. Jury seems out on the exhaust benefits for the 4.7. I tow a 4500 pound rig in the summer.

Message: Using afermarket "high performance " computers or chips will usually squeeze the most horsepower out of you engine by readjusting fuel pressure and delivery, also changes ignition timing. When lugging the engine down while towing, heats the engine up due to the ignition being so far advanced to get the most horspower (not torque)out of your engine.A mustang will not tow A 4500lb. trailer very well.Mustangs are not set up for torque, If you want your truck to play with mustangs use A high performance computer, If you want to pull A heavy trailer use A computer set up for towing (stock).

Message: Guys,
I've got a '03 Dakota Quad w/ a 4.7. Who makes a chip? Webpage avail? Whaddya know as far as performance enhancement. (the trucks..not me!)I've got a 3" Catback exhaust that seemingly improved the sound more than the performance. I then put on a AirRaid element and housing...just made more noise. Replaced that w/ a TrueFlow system (foam filter inside the stock house w/ an intake runner) and BINGO...that produced some grunt on the low and mid range. WHAT NEXT? Whose got a chip that you can program through the OBDII port under the dash? As much as I wish for a HEMI, the little 4.7 is a keeper that I'd love to nudge towards 300HP...any chance?

Message: Anything year model 1995 and older, you can replace the computer or chip. 1996 and newer you have to reprogram the computer you have. It is called " flashing " .That does not mean to stand in front of your truck wearing just an overcoat, but you have to get A programer ( you can buy one from Hypertec ) and go into the computer to change the settings for A horsepower change.
Also try relocating your air intake temp.sensor from the intake manifold to the air filter housing. This will give you more power.
Good luck !

Message: There are currently no aftermarket piggyback chips for the 4.7.
Superchips -no.
Hypertech -no.
Jet -yes, but this is actually a chip designed for the 5.9/5.2 that does nothing for the 4.7 (although I have never heard a possitive word from the 5.9/5.2 guys either).
Kenne Bell -stopped shipping due to lack of sales.
Flashes
Mike Leach flash works well. Contact Kolak at kolak@aol.com. This is a flash developed for Jeep prior to the release of the HO engine. This flash was listed in the Jeep Performance parts catalog but was discontinued when the HO engine was developed. Note that this flash is still listed in the catalog.
KRC performance is doing custom flashes as well although I beleive they have Mike Leach do them.
There is also a company that solders a custom chip into your PCM to provide better performance. This has been shown to work well.
The only product available that will connect a PC to your PCM (that has shown any promise) is the SMT-6. This is a piggyback unit that works well for supercharger and turbocharger applications. This is because the unit will modify fuel, control additional injectors, and can retard timing. The unit can normally advance timing also, but the 4.7 and 5.7 use the new Motorola system which uses an unusual crankshaft position signal that no current piggyback can decode. This is why I wouldn't hold my breath for Superchips or Hypertech to develop a product.
Smt are developing a new box called the SMT-7 that apparently is designed to handle the Motorola system. The problem with these boxes is that they are not a plug and play. They give you the tool. You then need to spend dyno time finding the best tune for your engine.
Bill Henry, if I was you I would go for a throttle body and HO cams. You already found out that the new intake is just a noise maker. The exhaust will pay off later when you add the other mods.

Message: The Leach flash works well, but is only for '00. The HO cams work well for towing, but if you're looking for 300 hp you might want one of the hotter alternatives. KRC performance offers a couple for the 4.7.
