Subject: Next Generation 4.7 Magnum V8 IP: Logged
Message: I recently had some warranty work done to my '04 Dakota QC with a 4.7 and 5 spd auto. I took it to the dealer to have the A/C repaired. When I got my paperwork from the dealer I noticed that it listed the engine as "Next Generation 4.7L Magnum V8" is there a difference in a 4.7L Magnum and a Next Generation 4.7L? Or is it just what they call the 4.7?

The 4.7 is night and day different design than the older LA engines. Overhead cam and all the other stuff.
It's actually more advanced than the HEMI in many ways. The HEMI just sells, and is BIGGER of course.

Message: I don't think it has anything to do with the engine exactly. Your 2004 4.7, and mine, has what's called a Next Generation Controller. It's the engine computer. Used to be JTEC, now it's NGC.
JasonB can either confirm this, or tell me I'm so wrong it's not funny, and tell you what it really means.
Jason?

Message: The sticker on my 2000 referred to it as the "next generation V8" also. I guess it's because of the all new design from the old 318/360.

Thanks For Your Help

Message: Speed limiter - looks like has the lowest setting. Try turning key to start just before hitting it; dash will go blank and limiter is gone.

Message: Well I wouldnt go out and sayig its a better
motor...and I havent had a belly pan leak on
mine yet....depends on how you take care of
your truck...and for my 5.2 for stock it runs and
drives damn good even compared to the all
mighty 4.7.
O well spend 10,000 dollares in each one and
I bet the 5.2 will come out top!

Message: Even though the 4.7 is a Next Generation engine, there are some controller differences to note
2003 was the first year for next generation PCM's in Dakota..... The PCM and TCM got combined into one box. 4 connectors on NGC versus 3 on JTEC
**Keep in mind that you cannot do a engine swap between NGC and JTEC engines!(4.7) The tone wheel for the crank sensor is different and is not compatible.)**
