I have a 01 Dakota 4.7L, AWD, 56000 miles. Looks like I just lost my transfer case. Anyone else had problems with their's?

Late 2001 year model Dakotas may have the longer powertrain warranty. If you are the original owner and purchased it late enough in the model year, you got the 7 yr 100000 mile (w/$100 deductible) Home For The Holidays Warranty. That was a promotion that started the longer powertrain warranties on DC vehicles. It was non-transferrable (I think) to susequent owners, so used Dak buyers are out of luck on that one.

Did you purchase new late in that model year?

Nope. My transfer case is still bolted in. How did you lose a whole transfer case? You must have had you mind on other things not to notice your transfer case gone missing.

Did not loose the whole thing. It just ate it self up as I left a light. Not sure if it had anything to to with the All Wheel Drive or not. I know a few other folks with the Dakota and none of them seem to have it. The shop is going to tear it apart on Monday to see which component let loose. They said that to order a new one from Dodge, it is on the "restricted parts list" and that it may take a while. Not sure what is "restricted" about a transfer case. As for the warranty, I did not get the 7/70...unfortunately.

"Restricted" means only that DC needs very specific inofrmation concerning WHY the dealership needs to replace it. There should be very little delay once a complete and thorough diagnosis is given to DC...assuming the diagnosis justifies replacement.
