Subject: Speed sensor in diff/ fluctuating idle IP: Logged
Message: I have had the idle problem with my truck for a few weeks now. As I down shift using the gears and motor to slow me down then push the clutch in the idle will drop off and stall the motor. If I don't use the motor and gears to slow me down it will idle fine. My question is that my speed sensor in the diff. is out (ABS light and Brake light are on). I took it to dodge for the idle problem. They said they couldn't find the problem. They charged me $86 to give me some advice. Their advice was to replace the speed sensor and see if that solves my problem. Have any of you with this sensor problem experienced idle problems at the same time?

If, your speed sensor doesn't work, yes, it could be the problem. That means your spedo doesn't work either.
That speed sensor is expensive. But, easy to replace.
I'd goto www.newdodgeparts.com to find it. Or print out the price and bring it into your local dealer. Just don't want to see anyone get ripped by the dealers

Message: It is a 99 with a 5.2 and 5 speed. The speedo doesn't work until about 35mph. I have done some reading up on this site, and lots are having the same symptoms. Dodge quoted about $55 for the new sensor. To have them install it, it would be about $140 total for parts and labor.
They said I need to replace the differential fluid when I do it or the sensor will go bad again. Do you think this is true...I just replaced the fluid last month.

Message: I aslo have had to replace my speed sensor. The stuff about replacing the oil I think is not necessary.
It cost me 35$ for the sensor and 40$ labor to install it.
I had the exact same symptoms and replacing the sensor solved everything!!! thank goodness...

Message: When you remove the sensor, you will know if you need to service the rear differential fluid. Excess metallic debris collected on the sensor is a huge clue. Also, if you have been longer than the recommended interval, change it anyway...your truck will thank you for it.
